Flathead oil plugs

Did a search but didn't come up with anything. This is sort of truck related. My dad rebuilt a flathead to replace the tired one in his '47 Ford Coupe. He went to prime the oil system and has a rather large oil leak. He thinks he may have left out an oil plug since three came with the rebuild set and he only used two. He suspects it is one at the back of the engine. Does anyone have a picture of that area for reference? Or maybe you know off the top of your head where these are located. Any help would be greatly appreciated. None of my manuals provide a view of these plugs.

Thanks!

Unless he left out a plug on the back of the main oil galley (behind the flywheel, which would absolutely gush) there are only two plugs I know of, at the top of the block right near the bellhousing. This is where the oil goes to filter and gauge.

Is it leaking from between the engine and bellhousing? Maybe no seal on the oil pump idler gear behind the flywheel? Or left the cover off of it altogether? The plugs that Ross mentioned would be the only other thing I could think of that would cause a big leak. A bad rear main seal could leak but I wouldn't think it'd be a major leak during priming.

Here's a picture of that area. The picture is to show a modification for near-full-flow filtering, so there is an extra hole compared to stock (I believe it's the one with no fitting).

I think that's the hole for the oil pump's bolt, he must have chased it.

Interesting! I didn't think they went all the way through. I'll have to take a look at the block I have sitting in the garage.
Thanks

Here's a view of my Dad's engine and the hole in question. Should it be plugged? Is it the oil galley?

The gear below the arrow is the cam drive for the oil pump. The pump drive gear sits in the recess to the left.

That looks like the rear of the oil galley tube. I'd think it does need a plug. The Van Pelt site shows that the cover and gasket over that gear should cover that hole, but the way it sticks out from the actual bolt pattern I would think it would leak under high pressure without being plugged.

Yes that hole must be plugged. If you don't have the plug, check with a machine shop... they usually have some extras laying around. I think it's an odd size/ thread. T/M

Yes, indeed it does have to be plugged and I believe it is 1/4 pipe in size. Be sure to put thread lock compound on the threads before you install it just to make sure it doesn't back out or leak. An old machinist taught that trick years ago.
