For the last three days when I go to start my truck in the morning it has a hard time starting. I think that fuel is siphoning back to the tank because it is only hard to start after sitting for 8 hours or so. It has no problem starting thoughout the day even if the engine is cold. Any thoughts?
The fuel can't bleed back to the tank, there is a check valve in there. Unless that went bad. I don't know all the info on this, but I know there is a check valve.
When you turn the key on, can you hear the pump running? You may want to check your GPR to make sure it is working.
It is normal for the fuel to bleed down after shutting off the engine. Hook up a fuel pressure gauge and you'll see what happens.
Instead your problem is a cold start issue. Either you have a bad glow plug relay, or you have an HPOP oil bleed down issue. Both are really easy to check. Just hook up a multimeter to the GPR and check to see if you get equal voltage across the two large terminals. To check for oil bleed down, there is an inpection plug on the top of the reservoir. Pop that plug off and you should see oil within 1 inch from the top.
Do both tests in the morning after the engine has sat overnight.
I checked the high pressure oil resevoir this morning and the oil was within an inch of the top. Now I'm starting to think it's the glow plug system because it pours white smoke before it fires. I was checking the connections on the glow plug relays and the relay the is set closer to the engine has some rust going on. The rubber cover was hard and brittle like it had been heated real hot as well as the connector.
I just checked both relays that are in the valley of the engine. They both had 12 volts on one side of the large terminals but had nothing on the opposite side when I had my cousin cycle the key. So, I'm guessing the relay is bad but which one is which?
You can get a new one from Napa for about $30, ask for a GPR-109... Do not tell them you need a GPR for a powerstroke or the price will jump about $50 bucks!
The front one is for the Intake Air Heater. You can delete the IAH and use that relay as a GPR as well... there both the same.
