Spend the money and put in Evans Waterless NPG+ Coolant. you never have to change it again and it requires NO SCA additives and is good for 500,000 miles or more. Your cooling system will never boil over or freeze, never cavitate like regular coolant and the cooling system still looks clean after I have been using it for 50k+ miles. Here is a link: Posted a few years ago when I started using it. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/2...g-coolant.html

Evans is good stuff, but for my PSD, I prefer an Extended Life Coolant. Plus, Evans is freaking expensive.

There are quite a few choices of ELC's out there, but I chose Chevron Delo ELC. It's good for 750,000 miles or 8 years without an extender, or 1 million miles with the extender.

Delo ELC is the best available, in my opinion.

Is the Delo ELC a waterless coolant also? I like the Evans just because it isn`t supposed to turn the coolant to a vapor on the hot spot areas of the engine and heads which allows better heat transfer. Does the Delo ELC have just as high of a boiling point and is pressureless? These are reasons why I went with the Evans NPG+. If the Delo ELC is cheaper and has all of this then I would be happy to give it a try. Not trying to start a coolant war thread or anything, just posting some valid questions so he can make an educated decision.

What about the coolant from places like Autozone, Napa, ect... Will these coolants be fine to put in my truck. Im looking for a coolant that I dont have to check the ph or add anything to it.

Well, I dunno, with all due respect, it sure seems like you are to me. It's just my opinion, but if you wanted to delineate the differences between Evans waterless and any other coolant, much less an Extended Life Coolant, you wouldn't have worded your post the way you did, in such a challenging manner. You would have merely pointed out why you prefer Evans over an ELC, or any other "water-added" coolants, and left it at that.

Just so there is no misunderstanding, I wasn't trying to discredit Evans, nor was I telling the OP not to use Evans, just that it was expensive stuff and that I preferred an Extended Life Coolant over Evans, specifically Chevron Delo ELC over Evans Waterless.

But, since you think the OP needs more info to make an educated decision, I'll say this, Gooch prefers an ELC over Evans in the 7.3 PSD.

Here are two paragraphs cut and pasted from one of Gooch's posts regarding coolant usage in the 7.3L PSD:

To give you a little background, first let me say that I've had extensive training and education in the field of coolants, some by the coolant manufacturers themselves. I worked with International during their cavitation crisis of the 6.9L and 7.3L IDI, helping to write bulletins, provide technical field data, and testing several different types of coolants, SCA's and mixtures thereof. I've operated and maintained a large fleet (100+ vehicles) of International/Ford 7.3L Powerstrokes. I am also a Mechanical Engineer with a background in Materials Science who has studied cavitation in cylinder walls and water pumps. Coolants are my specialty.

I have no intention of discrediting...comments about the Evans and RMI-25, only to inform you. Evans is a good product, although expensive and hard to find. Less expensive, easier to find modern HD ELC's provide similar operating lives and similar (or better) protection. And the Evans does require modification of your cooling system to run low pressure, when your water pump seal is designed to run (and seal) under higher pressure, as documented by Ford. I have not used RMI-25 and don't plan to for reasons I won't discuss here. I would not recommend putting anything into your cooling system other than coolant and SCA.
I haven't done a ton of research, but there seems to be anecdotal evidence that Evans doesn't allow the transmission to run as cool as before, once a user switches from a water-added coolant to Evans.

Evans coolant - Diesel Forum - The Diesel Stop.com

Again, not claiming the following is fact, but it looks like the reason Evans doesn't "work" as well as a water-added coolant is because the viscosity of Evans is so great, the OEM factory water pumps (that were engineered to run water-added coolants in a pressurized system) need to be modded/re-engineered to run the Evans coolant.

Cdiddy, if you want to run a coolant designed for your engine that doesn't require additives, then completely backflush your engine and add a diesel approved Heavy Duty Extended Life Coolant.

Here is a list of ELC's that will work:
  • CAT HD ELC
  • Fleetrite HD ELC (International's brand)
  • Rotella HD ELC
  • Prestone HD ELC
  • Zerex Extreme HD ELC
  • Chevron/Texaco/Delo ELC

The latest formulation of the Delo ELC has a maintenance-free change interval of 750K miles/8 years or 1M miles with an extender.

I agree with Stewart -- ELC is the best way to get what you're after. Pretty much no maintenance up to several hundred thousand miles, depending on which one you get...

I looked at the Evans when dumping the Ford fluid but due to cost, availability and having to drill a hole in the cap to eliminate any pressure, I went with the Delo koolaid.

I would also recommend staying away from any 50/50 premix fluid as the proper ELC mix is 60/40. When flushing the engine and draining with the lower plugs out, there will still be a small amount of water trapped in the block/heater. When using premix, you will probably end up with a 46/54 or 47/53 ratio that can lead to cavitation with the premixed stuff.

I buy the Delo ELC concentrate at Chevron jobbers everywhere (all our heavy trucks run it as well as the PSD's). Costs about $14 a gallon, but most jobbers demand you buy a case (6 gallons). When I converted my 7.3 over to it, I also converted my two Volvo's at the same time. BTW, Delo ELC is good for 800K miles....that is a lifetime coolant to me.

I've seen 100% concentrate ELC at the local IH dealer and at my Caterpillar dealer has it and/or can order it.

Ask them for full concentrate - not 50/50 premixed - ELC. Not sure the going rate though.
