Ok boys and girls, I recently bought a 2000 f250 supercab 4x4 7.3 auto. I had a 99 F350 before, same set up. My 2000 is light years faster, the guy I bought it from said it had a chip but didnt know much about it. I raced it weds, it ran 10.66, 66.87 mph in the eighth mile, veeery respectable for 7500 lbs +. My 99 only ran 12.04 to 12.20 at 57.12 mph. This truck is waay quicker. I looked at the obd port, no tuner. I thought maybe it had a tuner programmed into the obd then taken off, I called the place who installed the chip, they said if its not there someone took it out. So Im now asuming it has an actual CHIP in the pcm. I see that some chips have a tuner or wires that come out of the pcm. I dont see anything. I have not yet opened the pcm box to look yet. Any idea what ive got or what to look for in the pcm. Im not just going by seat of the pants here, this truck moves pretty good.Airraid intake but all else stock. Let me know what and where to look for, and what ya think i might have
There is a possibility that the PCM was reflashed with a tune. If there was a chip on the PCM you would be able to see it facing you from the inside of the cab.
sooo, how do I find out if its reflashed, only by paying Ford to check it? I Like the tune but would rather be able to switch it off and on for mpg and power. Ill try to include pics of the ecm in the box and the obd cable to give you a look at what ive got.Thanx
If you take it to Ford, they'll reflash it back to stock, then charge you a fortune. Do you really want that? If there's no chip on it, then the PCM was reflashed. Here's what my PCM looks like with & without my Tony Wildman chip on it:
sorry for being ignorant, but is that a picture of your pcm without the plastic cover over it, taken from about knee level under the dash? If so do I need to take out the 10mm bolt in the pcm in the engine compartment to release the pcm to look at mine? Thanx again
after relooking at your picture I think maybe you have cut away your plastic protective box in the cab for ez in and out acess? I tried to show my pictures but it says I cant.
No -- that's with the cover on, I just cut a hole in the cover so I could get to the chip with out pulling the PCM...
If you pull your PCM to look, don't forget to make SURE the keys are not in the ignition. You can fry the PCM pulling it with it on. I would also suggest you write down your PCM code for future reference. If you get a chip, you'll need that code. Should be something like PMT1...
Ok, so I took out the pcm today, and yep, there is a chip in it. Dynosources it says. Can I just remove the chip and reinstall it when I want mileage or power? Especially if I cut out my plastic box like you did? Or do I have to do something other than disco the batts and take oput the key??? Thanx
Just pull the key out of the ignition and throw it in the back seat. Then pull the chip and you're done. Don't even have to touch the batteries.
There are much better chips available out there if your interested. Including ones you can switch on the fly while driving. A custom chip costs about the same as the ones off the shelf, but will run circles around the other stuff.
My truck had a Superchip in it when i bought it... its gold and plugs into the same place as shown on the pcm pic above but it completely covers the hole... so that may be a possibility too..
