I know this has probably been gone over before, but I can't get the end of the radius arm to clear the bracket. I've removed the spring and shock from the upper mount and still can't pry the radius arm far enough back to clear the bracket. Is drilling out the rivets on these brackets my last recourse? This is a 79 F100 2wd.
It's my understanding from previous threads that in the case of a riveted radius arm bracket, a comealong is used to pull the radius arm far enough forward to clear. I can't speak from experience as my 77 F-250 had bolted brackets.
If you're planning to keep the truck long enough to need to change bushings again in the future, you might be ahead to drill out the rivets and replace with bolts - Grade 8.
I don't know if anybody else ever did it but when I changed mine I hooked a chain to a telephone pole then to the axle then had somebody watch as i backed the truck up enough to clear, set the parking brake then changed it. It went pretty easy

I can't do that because it's in the driveway with nothing to hook up from.
Plus, it does'nt have the engine or transmission installed yet. Looks like drilling the rivets may be my only solution. Thanks.
you could just remove the suspintion from the front and it should slide right out when you drop the coil spring, shock, and I-beam..the radius arm will pull forward with it.....
Go ahead...drop that coil spring...and see what happens.
The coil springs are under TREMENDOUS pressure and can take you head clean off if one is not careful.
I saw a coil spring fly over 100 feet once...when some goofball removed it without using the appropriate safety equipment.
I've already had the coil spring and shock out from the upper mount. I had the truck supported with jack stands and used a floor jack to lower the shock and spring from their upper position. My problem was a couldn't pry the radius arm far enough back to clear the bracket, it needed about an inch to clear.

i have removed the intire front i-beam, hub, spring assembly from these trucks, if the wheel is off the ground suported by the FRAME then there is no tension on the coil spring...take out two bolts and two nuts and its all out from under the front of the truck....i had to change one on my 73 f-100 about two and a half years ago with nothing but a floor jack ratchet and a few sockets.
