Stand alone computer for E4OD

HI All, I just got the 82 F-350, 460 auto on the road and with the 411 gears, the truck screams at 75 MPH. I have the option of installing a E4OD but I understand I need a stand alone computer for it. I was sad to see that TCI has them for around $800.
Has any one done this and can I use a different system or modify a Ford set up?

I am also on the TwEECer group and the same discussion has been going on there. Early diesel E4ODs used a stand alone computer that took road speed, throttle lever, engine RPM and barometric pressure inputs. It can probably be adapted to a gas engine the same way Baumann controls units work. I printed out and scanned the 92 system, and printed out but didn't scan the 90 system. The major difference is the source for the speed signal. 90 uses a speed sensor on the output, 92 uses the ABS sensor and an integrator in the speedometer head. If there is an interest I can post them here.
