Its happened twice now recently ! I used to be able to run my truck right down until the fuel gauge was in the red and the lie-ometer said 10kms to empty ! The lie-ometer has been very accurate on that one subject ! The past 2 time I've ran the truck low on fuel it starts running very rough like its running out ! The fuel light hasn't even come on yet and there is just under 1/4 tank left ! Lie-ometer says like 50 kms to empty ! The truck barely got me to the gas station on the weekend ! Kind of embarrassing with a chick in the truck !
Why all of a sudden is my truck not picking up the fuel when I'm running low ?????? Any ideas guys ??? Is my fuel pump shot ???? Is the pick up screen plugged ????? Is there to different pick up's in the tank ????
It sounds to me like its time for the in-tank mods(hutch/harpoon). When you run the tank below 1/4 it can suck in air from a valve on the side of the pickup tube, giving you the problems you described. I bet if you fill your truck back up to full, run it a few miles, the problems go away, and when you get back down to 1/4 or below it comes back. Been there done that, did the intank mods, problem solved. I'm sure others will chime in, but thats my .02.
When running the tank that low, you're likely picking up foam caused by fuel coming from the return line. Aside from increasing the risk of running out of fuel, or clogging the screens in the mixing chamber (part of the pick up assembly) the air in that foam is hard on your injectors. You're better off not running the tank that low. Injectors are expensive.
Here we go again...
Russ, I'd be curious if the pick-up in or the filters in the mixing chamber in the tank don't have some crud clogging them, making it harder for the pump to suck up the fuel when it gets low. Sounds like a good time to drop the tank and see whats going on in there.
When it get's to 1/4 tank I always start looking for a fuel station with any vehicle I drive.
Me too Dan..... ! when I'm in town its not a problem to do so... but I work in the bush and sometimes I'm pushing the limits if you know what I mean ! Hopefully I'll get a chance to do all the intank mods before I get caught ! lol

Thanks for the input Cory ! Sounds like thats what I got to do to mine !
Yea, I think he's a funny guy as well.
I posted that pretty late last night and I was pretty tired but I thought it might be helpful as he goes through quite a bit of stuff in the fuel system and I thought it might be a perfect time to do some mods for you as it sounds like the tank needs to tome down anyhow.
I hope it was a helpful video.
