I am trying to get an engine going. Its a 351 in a truck i just bought, not sure what shape its in. i have tried changing the coil and computer , turns over good and still nothing.the ignition is missing to i jumped a wire from the battery to the coil, have done this to get some older ones going but not sure if it works on a 79.
So... 351 with NO spark, it is in a '79 according to what I read in the original post... You tried changing the computer? If the truck is a '79 you mean the duraspark box? it is very possible that the pickup in the distributor is toast. That is really the only other thing that can be wrong if you have power to the read and whote wires on the smaller plug to the duraspark system(one is powered while cranking the other in run)
If this truck is a 1979: There are NO computers, NO electric fuel pumps, NO EFI on a 1979 truck...or car.
These parts did not appear until the 1980's.
No spark: It could be the DuraSpark ignition module, it could be the stator aka pickup coil inside the distributor, it could be both.
The same stator fits all 1974/79 cars/truck.

The ignition module is prolly the BLUE module, so called because it has a blue plastic square on the module just above where the wires feed out.
This module was used 1976/79, and well into the 1980's on cars/trucks (1976/78: except CA).
The ignition module is mounted vertically up against the left fender inner apron just in front of the firewall. Engine heat (especially on V8's) is the mortal enemy of these modules.
If it's replaced, use some washers to further space it away from the apron.
The more airflow around the module, the longer it will last.
well i took the duraspark off my other truck and what do you know it worked, its from a 429 truck but seems to work fine. Funny I tried 2 new ones and nothing?? Thanks guys....
