Transmission

I installed an SCT X3 chip in February, i dont pound the **** out of my truck but im an aggressive driver. I noticed my transmission slipped a couple times and it shifts VERY weird until it warms up all of the way.. My truck has 73K on it and to the best of my knowledge the transmission fluid has not been changed. I plan to change it tomorrow night but i wanted to know if it slipping could be a bigger problem than just the fluid?

I believe that fluid issues coud result in some slippage. You really should flush (or change) the fluid at 30k intervals as suggested in the manual. This is the place to start.

If you have it flushed, it has to be with a heated machine to be effective.

Do you have canned tunes or custom tunes on the SCT? If you have custom tunes - who are they from?

Hopefully others can give you more specific information.

It's also important to change the external filter every 10 to 15,000 miles. Book says 15,000. I make that the outside parameter since I tow and do it a litle early. Cheap ins.

Wow... way late on flushing or draiing your transmission fluid and changing out your filter (one in the pan and the external one).... and you wonder why your having slippage?

You also run a tuner and there are so many variables here as well that could cause tranny problems... yet you still wonder?

Heck... after doing a flush and then dropping the pan to clean out the pan and internal filter.... you may have more slippage when new fluid gets into your system!!! Why... the new fluid will clean and loosen up any build-up and may clog things up or the clutch plates have worn down that new fluid will slip past them where the old fluid was a thicker viscosity due to being old.

The tuner can also cause issues as depending how it is/was programmed can affect how your tranny performs... and there is no exact answer anyone can give... except try the tranny flush and then drain and refill and change your filters... and see!!!

Good luck, you may need it.

At 73K, you tranny fluid is well spent and should have been changed twice by now. Change/flush the fluid and hope that it does more good than harm.

I believe the fluid may have been changed before i purchesed the truck with 40K on it. I have not flushed it myself. Does anyone know the part numbers for the 2 filters? Where is the external filter located? I would like to do it right... My friend has the heated system that does the heated power flush..

I have an SCT X# with custom tunes from Eric @ innovative diesel.

Thank you for your help guys...

The external filter (FT-145 or part # 3C3Z-7B155-BA OR aftermarket filter NTZ09-C09B) is behind the passenger side front bumper. I used an impact wrench to get the filter housing off to avoid twisting lines. It takes a 7/8" socket. You will lose very little fluid through changing the filter - only a few ounces.

Old ATF is lower viscosity. As the transmission works the ATF it shears the molecules, making old fluid thinner than new fluid.

Do you have the part numbers to the transmission pan gasket and the internal transmission filter please?

Thank you,

Bob

Don't worry about the internal filter, the pan gasket is reusable. Just clean the pan and pull the magnet and clean it then put it back in.

The internal filter only needs to be changed at a rebuild. You can change it if you like, it just isn't necessary.

MistaBob,
I also have Erics x3 custome tunes and have what I woudl call Tourque Converter shudder. It shudders when locked in 5th pullin a trail or in a heavy head wind and I push the loud pedel down to just before it would down shift. I have talked to Eric about this and he said he could increase (pressure??) for my truck. When not tuned this does not happen and I have less than 5,000 mile on a complete transmission service. I was reading on the 6.4 section the other day and may guys their are having shudder with stock trucks, they tell me it is the same trans on the 08's also.

Let me know what you find out.

I called my local Advance Auto parts and they told me there were 2 diff types of transmissions:

E40D
and
5R110W

How do I determine which one I have? I need to order the parts so I can service my transmission on Monday.

Thank you,

Bob
