rear diff fluid...

ok i'm about to swap an 83 8.8 rear into my 89 f-150, it has 3.55's and a limited slip, where as my truck now has an open diff. i had to drain the fluid to make sure it didn't have water in it(which it didn't) and i'm thinkin about using synthitc when i put it in my truck what do yall think is it worth it or should i use regular fluid, also what weight fluid should i get and how much does an 8.8 rear take? thanks in advance, Justin

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 12-Nov-02 AT 11:58 PM (EST)]3 qts if absolutely bone dry.
Synthetics are awesome stuff, but realistically how long do you think you'll own this truck? If you're not going to put another 75,000 to 100,000 miles on it, it's probably not worth it.

Also, don't forget to get the 4oz bottle of friction modifier from ford or parts store equivalent. Easiest way to get it in is to pour it into a bottle of gear oil and then squirt the whole bottle into the rearend.

While I think synthetics are a waste of money in the engine. The diff is one place where there it's probably worth the extra cost. The factory fill is now synthetic for Ford axles. Mobil One and Redline claim that you do not need the LS additive. I would leave just a little room for the additive in case you get chattering.

Wouldn't it leak a little through the seals?

Seepage is a risk if there are a lot of miles on it. My old Chevy's pinion seal started to weep after switching to synthetic lube. A new seal was only $6, but no fun to change.

The pinion seal isn't hard to replace. No special tools needed. If you mark everything and get the nut back to the right place you can get it perfect again. Just run the nut down until all the slop is gone and the preload is right. Easy. The axle seals arn't hard to replace either but in my opinion not worth the trouble.
