pumping out tranny fluid?

Hi,
I just wanted to now if it is ok to take off a cooler line at the cooler and pump out the fluid by running the engine. I have heard of people flushing their transmissions this way by pumping it all out and then refilling. I would think this is horrible for the internals. When I flush I pump out through a cooler line and refill through the filler tube in equal amounts simultaneously. What I'm getting at is can I pump out all or most of the fluid this way but not refill it? I have to remove my transmission, and I just put new fluid in it yesterday and want to save it and keep it clean.
Thanks,

It might be ok but I'm not certain. What I can say is I had an accident where a cooler line blew off and I lost my transmission fluid traveling 70mph down the freway. By the time I pulled over the vehicle had no forward power. I turned off the engine, had the vehicle towed, filled it back up and all seems ok so far. Who knows if any long term damage happened, but I don't feel any difference in it's performance.

and you might want to consider adding an external "oil filter" to it. Summit sells these but I just bought ehr external mount for $12. You don't want to run it dry. The transmission will generally accept an overfill of 2 quarts easily at idle. There is a lot of space in a transmission but they keep the level low because it will foam at high speed. Then you just pump out 3 quarts, stop and refill 3 quarts. Keep doing that till it is clean. Remote filter makes it easy to flush next time.

Take a look in the Tech Articles part of this site. I wrote an article on how to safely do this very thing.

pumping out tranny fluid?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Nov-02 AT 09:20 PM (EST)]Thanks for the advice. I am actually draining the fluid so I can remove the transmission. I just wanted to pump it out so it would stay clean versus removing the pan and contaminating the oil with dirt, etc. I actually flushed it yesterday to try to fix my problem, but no luck, so I have to remove the transmission anyways.
Mark, that's exactly what I wanted to know, thanks!
