Here it is, still not sure if I can use it, but for $91, I could'nt pass it up.

It seems to be in good shape, shifts good, and no play in the shifter when gear.

That is the one bolt that I could'nt get off yesterday, it's rounded pretty good, so I went back today with the bolt extracter
and was able to get it off.

there is the spot where the speedo cable should go, but it's blocked off.

We have a transmission warehouse here, that only sell parts. They have tons of cases and other parts from transmissions they disassemble. You might see what is involved with swapping the back half and see if you can find a similar place you might be able to find one at. It is weird that half the hole is there. You would think you could just drill it out and slide a gear on the output shaft.

I would like to find out what it would to swap out the back half, seeing the partial speedo hole made me think that maybe there was a gear inside. If it did'nt cost too much I might do it, because those transmissions are very hard to find, and usually very expensive. The only reason this one was cheap was because it came from the u-pull yard, instead of off the shelf at the regular junkyard.

Would they have a tailshaft housing for a 4WD ZF? I can get another one cheap but the idiots at the yard picked up the whole truck with the loader and had the fork right under the transfer case and cracked the housing.

Let me know.

The way I understand it, if you swap the back half case you have to re shim the whole thing, they are not all machined the same.

Personally, I want to try it, I have a perfect 2WD ZF5 and I want to use it in a 4WD.

So if there is a 4x4 Back half available I'll take one as well.

-Enjoy

It's not that easy.

You have to replace the entire output shaft as well.

IMO it's not worth the cost or hassle to convert one.

You'd be better off finding a 4WD trans.

Syscostang,
Thank you, I am interested in a 8.875 ZF-S542 4x4 rear case half.

Bashby,
Thank you, And yes I have considered the resale value of the Diesel 2WD ZF.

And a lot of other things! But that doesn't mean everything!

For you that have not done the research, The parts NEW are not that expensive, It's the work to HAVE IT DONE that will cost you.
It's not something the back yarder can do with standard tools.

I'm lucky, I have someone (I trust) that is not only qualified but has the tools. All I have to do is keep running their name on my cars... It's there anyways!

I called and they didn't have any used ones, a new one pre-92 was about $300. I think I'd keep checking the junkyard.
