During my V8 swap I changed from a 4 speed to automatic. I removed what I thought was the power line from the nuetral saftey switch but upon examination it is for rear backup lights. My question is is the nuetral saftey switch on a manuel tranmission located in a different place. I have ignition power to the selenoid now and can just splice the new switch into the line under the dash but I would like to know how it worked originally
Think I solved myself. I was checking site and it appears that there is a clutch sftey swich under the dash. Maybe previous owner jumped it. I'll look in the morning. Post answers are on this site already if you search hard enough
NOt sure what year they startted using clutch switches, but I think it was mid to late 80's. I've searched for old posts that I was sure I used exact quotes from the title and found nothing.
1984 was the first year of the Clutch "Start" Switch (located on the Clutch Pedal assymbly), and Key left in Ignition cylinder buzzer.
Also 1984 was the first year of The Parking Brake warning light switch, and the Headlamp on Buzzer being standard equipment. It was only optional before 1984.
These were mandated by, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS)
So I just ended up tracing the wire under the dash and splicing in a neutral switch. My truck is a 81 so my question would be what was the saftey switch tied to at that time or could you start truck in gear.
i can start my 81 and 86 in gear.nether one of them have the clutch switch.probably different rules,in the great white north, eh.have to make sure she's in neutral.i took a wall out of my old shop buy reaching in and turning the key.it was my first standard truck.
I learned the hard way also. I built this 68 cougar with all original metal. I just had gotten it back from paint and was working on the vacum supply for the headlight doors I reached in and started it. You can figure out what happened right into my truck parked in the driverway. I've had 2 different fenders on that car since and it still isn't right. I spend way to much time searching ebay for the perfect fender
One of the people I used to work with hit a remote starter standing in front of the truck, it started and crushed him into the work bench paralyzing him!
That was a bit before all these safety switches.
I have reached in and done it to many times...
Never done it with a remote. (Knock on wood, (Oh Natalie where are you))

There was no such thing as a manual transmission clutch neutral switch in 1981. You could start it in gear with a manual transmisson.
As I said earlier, first year model for one for the clutch, (At least in the USA) is 1984.
For automatic transmissions however, the first NSS, (Neutral Safety Switch) for a automatic was 1967, on the F-Series. Also the first year for backup lamps as well.
