My wifes 2002 X has a check engine light coming on. I've reset it a couple of times and and it has come back on after a start or two. My programmer is giving me a code for glow plugs. It has started pretty well but lopes and blowes more smoke then norm. on cold starts. Once running for a couple of minutes straightens out. I'm guessing I have a couple or so that are not glowing. Looking under the hood it is different than my 2000 f350 which has two relays in that area. Instead of a glow plug relay it looks to have a sold state controller of some type. I've been told this may be due to the truck being a CA model. Is it difficult to diag. glow plugs? The truck has 130k. Should I replace them all at this milage? How hard a job is replacing glow plugs and at this milage is there any other things to look at or replace while in that area? As always thanks in advance for the help.
Pulling the valve covers on your Ex is just as easy as pulling the valve covers on your F-100.
After you get the boost tubes out of the way.
Underneath you will find a wiring harness that tends to come loose and is easily repaired using a quarter that is ground down on two sides.
The glow plugs are removed just like a skinny little spark plug.
Use a 10mm deep socket 1/4" drive. 3/8" drive is too fat and it will interfere with the rocker arm.
While you are in there, retorque the rocker arm pedastals to 20 foot pounds.
Retorque the injector hold downs at the bottom edge of the injectors to 120 inch pounds.
The glow plugs are easy, just getting to them takes a little while. I don't know about the Ca. truck. I just want to get you back to the top. Good luck.
I would ohm out the Glow plug wires first. Find out what dead ones you have. I hated the passenger side valve cover.. I am not left handed or a contortionist. Getting to the valve cover bolts was a pita and i yelled many swear words.
just remember to turn the motor over by hand(breaker bar) a half dozen times to help get the oil that falls in the glowplug holes.
Hey guys, thanks a bunch for the great info. Kwikkordead can you elaborate more on the ground down quarter fix for the connectors. What does this connector/harness go to? Is it the glow plugs? And one other question on brands. The first call I made was NAPA and he rattled off like five different brands or glow plugs they carried. Prices varied from about $13 to $28 a piece. Is there a favorit brand or one to stay away from?
Grind a quarter down untill it touches the head of the president. Slip it into the connector. The valve cover will hold it in place. And the grinding is so the quarter don't stick out of the connector and stopping the valve cover from going flat on the valve cover gasket.
I made this to send to my dad. Shows a couple different options. Not the best pictures though.
