T-stat Gasket Question

What kind of rubber gasket comes with the T stat? During this flush, I removed the old one and it seems the that T stat sits in a small circle with a gasket going over it.

The first time I had the gasket down first and then the T stat and I had me a nice mess. This time I did it around and it is still leaking. When I went to the parts store to get a new t stat for good measure, I got a gasket that seals around the T stat.

Anyone have a picture / description of the gasket and how it is suppose to fit?

Thanks

Alex, I don't have a pic of the gasket, but it is flat and you need to torque the bolts even. I put a little Hi-heat ATV on mine and torqued the bolts 3 different times, to get the right torque on them so they don't leak. But I changed the housing to the billit housing. Good luck.

The gasket fits on top of the stat.

Be SURE you got the right thermostat! Make sure it looks just like the old one, especially that it is as long!

The reason I say this is that most parts houses get the wrong one, and it doesn't shut off a bypass port when it opens.

Something of which to be aware.

Here yaa go Alex, did my t-stat-billet housing a week or so ago. See that lip, put a small sock in the hole and clean around the mating surface and gasket seat with a scrubby and dry it off completely, let it air dry then insert the gasket in that lip, then place the t-stat right on top, and put you housing on straight down, not to move anything. Tighten the bolts down finger tight then just go around like you would your lug nuts on your tires, until tight, here's a pic for yaa Mine looks nasty but it cleaned up well, good luck..

Gasket over the T stat? Getting mix responses.

I don't have a torque wrench so I could just be over tightening it. I have put this damn thing back together a couple of times and I keep getting a small little leak around the housing.

This is so frustrating.

btw, the t stat looked identical to mine but when the guy went and got a gasket I believe he gave me the wrong one. The T stat is nice and long and fits just like the old one did. Hell I was having this leak just trying to put the old one back in.

Which way are you installing it, the gasket that is? You might save yourself some trouble and get one from the dealer tomorrow, I don't know what kind of time line you are on. I'm pretty sure that I put the gasket over the thermostat when I did mine. Wish I had gotten that billet housing to put on there when I changed out the coolant though. Oh well, next time.

If I was to use my stock housing over again and it was in better shape than mine, I would have put a nice clean bead of permatex black sealant or what Rick said, some RTV. Not goobed on just a clean bead then let stand a couple minutes then put the housing on. Just looked at the direction for ya, t-stat goes in first then the gasket on top

Gasket on top of the thermo.

Some guys have had really bad luck with the thermo housing because they are cheap-azz stamped steel. Even if you get a new cheap-azz stamped steel one from Ford, put a nice, even bead on the housing and let it set up properly before installing it.

I know its no help now, but like others have said, I really dig the billet thermo housing from Dieselsite.

I am going to head by Napa again and see if they have a new housing in stock. I would buy it since mine is looking pretty beat up, either way I am getting some RTV and beading it up.

This is so frustrating. My truck and I are not off to a good work relationship. However, I haven't been all that nice to her yet.

If we can get past this she has goodies waiting for her at Clay's.

Your gonna get it, no fun intended but that was just one of the reasons went through Dieselsite, getting everything right the first time or from the dealer. Napa can be good on some things but not all. I got an extra rubber gasket that they put in the box, its yours if you want it, prolly to late now but let me know

And don't use silicone or Permatex on that rubber gasket!
Use faucet lube, a very slimy silicone based grease that lubes the o-ring and allows it to move around under pressure and do it's job of sealing in the antifreeze.
If you glue it down with gasket sealer then it won't be able to shift under the thermal expansion and contraction and you will end up having a flange that always leaks a tiny little bit.
I've been using faucet lube on every O-ring flange for the past 20 years and NONE of them have ever come back on me leaking, even several years later.

So rtv sealant would be a bad idea around the housing? I was going to put the sealant around the housing and the top of the T-stat.

Metal to metal, the sealant is good.

Dan is saying don't try to glue any gasket to the housing or the thermo. Allow it to shift and squirm (this is esepcially important for when you're torquing the bolts) so it won't rip, tear, or get damaged.

The gasket for the water pump is a perfect example of one you want to lubricate prior to installing the new pump. You want it to be able to squirm and keep it's shape, integrity, and stay in the groove while you're fitting the pump into the engine, then bolting it down.

Gotcha.

I just brought home a new T-stat housing and it includes the new gasket.

I may have over tightened the other housing and bent it a little. This was something the Napa guy pointed out. Either way, new housing and new t stat.
