New FL 820 S

I went to get a new motorcraft oil filter and I noticed on the box of the 820 S it says "New Size, Same Performance". It's shorter than the old one.

Despite it being shorter, the thing that I hate the most is that they no longer have Ford Motor Company in handwriting written on them anymore. That was like vintage Ford and I liked it. They are still made in USA though.

Anybody else notice this? How long have these shorter ones been out?

They must have just released the filter you purchased. I went to my Walmart last weekend to get my MC oil and FL-820S filter and the filter is the same size as it's always been and it still has the Ford Motor Company logo written on the outer case.

I heard rumor that Ford was pulling out from Motorcraft and someone had bought it up. But, of all the searches I've done on the web lately, I cannot come up with anything to support this rumor. Anyone else heard this or know more?

How much shorter?

Looks like I'll try to find an old one and a new one so I can compare both.

Since it's still made in the USA all report the measurements in inches .

Same diameter

Height of old filter case is about 4"

Height of new filter case is about 3-11/16"

So difference of about 5/16".

This whole idea of Motorcraft and AC Delco aftermarket parts is kind of meaningless today because Ford and GM no longer manufacture parts in-house. Visteon was spun off from Ford as a separate company many years ago, as was Delphi from GM.

This shortened filter thing even happened with my Toyota. The engine came from the factory with a Denso filter that Toyota dealers in the USA cannot get. Instead, a slightly shorter filter that appears to be a Purolator in construction is painted as a Denso is sold by dealers.

I bet the new filter is cheaper to manufacture. I guess it's time to stock up on the old filter.

They are not any different. The only one is the 820 S.

Motorcraft isn't the only one who makes the FL820s...

Awright, who else makes the FL820s?

Note well, I'm not asking about PH8A, PureOne 24651, etc.

Excluding those brands, Mobil 1 and K&N. Maybe WIX filters if you have in your area. Mobil 1 filters have excellent casings. You can't put a dent in 'em with your fingers like you can do with cheaper filters. Best micron as well, but if you don't mind paying $10/filter...

I can't find any place that still has the older ones.
