Excluding those brands, Mobil 1 and K&N. Maybe WIX filters if you have in your area.
I guess you didn't understand the question. I'm not asking for comparable filters that crossreference to the FL820S and can replace it -- I specifically asked about the FL820S. To the best of my knowledge, only Motorcraft makes the FL820S.
I was just at Wal-Mart yesterday getting an oil filter, and the FL820 S was still the same old same old. But I live in east Tennessee, and I don't think half the people around here even change their oil, so these filters probably move a little slower.
I'm not so concerned with a little size reduction as I am internal construction. I assume the continuation of the "S" suffix means the anti-drainback valve is still silicone.
Are the new filters still Purolators? Do they still have the bypass valve on the bottom end as the old filters did?

INCORRECT!
Ford does NOT make Motorcraft oil filters in-house. So it's all a moot point.

Whatever.
Of course they outsource it, but where did I say that Ford makes them? I wrote Motorcraft; and the paper box says: "Designed, engineered and recommended by Ford Motor Company". The OEM behind it is Purolator, but they can't sell it under their name.
Maybe an expert can correct me, but 80% at 20 microns doesn't sound that bad.
Wix has beta ratio 2/20=12/25, a 19 micron rating and claims 100% at 25 microns.
Purolater claims 97 and 99% for their filters but does not say at what micron size.
Only Wix gives detailed data, but I doubt most of us even know what it means. I am not worried about the micron rating of the 820s, but am curious about what means ford took to get it shorter.
I think we need someone to do a cut open comparison of these filters and figure out what is different in the guts. Is it mechanical construction or media that shrunk. My Walmart still has the old filters.

The way I understand it is that a beta is the ratio of particles pre filter vs post filter, so a beta 2 is 50%, a beta 20 = 95%. That's the first fraction 2/20 and the second fraction 12/25 is the micron size.
So for the beta ratio you gave, the efficiency would be 50% of 12 micron particles and 95% of 25 micron particles.
I don't think all wix filters have the same beta ratio, therefore they all don't have the same efficency.
Purolator efficiency is based on 20 microns. Says on the pure one box. So it is 99% at 20 microns.
Maybe 80% at 20 microns isn't that bad, but I'm used to Donaldson and Amsoil filters with 98% efficiency at 15 microns.

Uh...Motorcraft IS Ford.
Motorcraft is Ford's own parts division.
Who cares what it says on the box? It's advertising.
If they designed, engineered, and recommended by Ford...then they should make the damn things!
Purolator's own is the same filter as the Motorcraft. Google "oil filter study" and see it for yourself.
