Thanks for the pictures. Did the ADBV's feel about the same in flexibility?

I threw the Fl1A valve out and couldn't find it in the trash can to take pics with the 820S valve. The 820S valve is thinner, tons more flexible and is softer than the plain rubber 1A valve.

I also noticed the 820 has quite a bit more pleats than the 1A does.

We just recently started to use some of the new 820s at work about 2 weeks ago. Most of the old style 820s are gone by now.

None of the other Motorcraft filters have changed though, not the Fl-400, FL1A, Fl-910, or the Lincoln LS FL-2021.

That's odd. Because in the pictures I took, my FL1A looked like it had a lot more pleats than the FL1A you took apart. Oh well, let's hope the rumors are correct and they are Purolator made. I need to find out next time, how much oil do these FL1A's hold? They are ginormous.

Is the silcone for longevity? It's not supposed to get brittle on, say a 5000-10000 mile oil change interval? Isn't that the point for the silcone ADBV? Shouldn't be too soft.

dkf,
Is that string around the filter media? If so, there is a good chance that they are made by purolator, because as far as I know, purolator is the only one that uses string around the media.

The FL1A had string around the filter. Just saying, I'd think whoever makes it makes the rest.

went to buy oil and filter for an oil change today and noticed they changed the filter...went to couple different AZ and part stores and i guess im about a month too late to stock up on the old filters...AZ also changed the size of their oil jugs for motorcraft as well as other brands from 5qts to 5.28 qts or something stupid like that...whats the point of that? also they charge about 17 bucks for a jug or you can buy a qt for 3 bucks...i thought the point of buying the jug was to save money

I noticed the pricing per quart vs. the 5 qt jug of motorcraft oil too at autozone. They were selling the quarts for $2.99 at the same time they were selling the 5 qt jug for $15.99.

Then if I go to Wal mart, I could buy the 5 qt jug of motorcraft for $11.50 and the quarts for $2.67.

Okay, so I may not be an oil filter guru like some of you guys, but can someone explain to me why in the world you would go so far as to stock up on the old filters? I just don't get it...

They say it works the same as the old one, and everyone here is going to start hoarding filters over 5/16ths of an inch that may well be meaningless?

Some are afraid to change...

I purchased TWO cases of the olf style FL-820-S filters to add to my current stash when I heard of this smaller filter! I now have enough Old Style filters to last me 200K miles!.......

Yeah its a string. I think purolator makes quite a few MC filters.

The original 820 filter had a rubber adbv. I'm not 100% shure how the story goes but they had issues with the rubber adbv not working properly and found a more flexible silicone valve fixed it so now it is an 820S the "S" stands for silicone. The thinner 5w-20 oils may have had something to do with the change to a silicone adbv and also the modulars need oil to get to the heads asap or the cams could gall up the journals because the cams ride directly on the aluminum.

I saw that also. Wal-mart is a sore subject to some but I always buy my oil there. Advance and Autozone tend to jack up the prices because they are a speciality store. I don't even buy wiper blades there as a local farm supply store has the same wipers advance and autozone sell but they are $5 a piece cheaper.

Hi All , new to the US forums.........from Australia.
I also have noticed the difference on my BOSS 5.4.

The original filter that came with the car was the older style 820S with the antique style writing on the canister. These are no longer available anywhere in Australia now and all the FORD dealers have gone to the alternative Taiwanese made Motorcraft units. Those are the same size but look cheaply made.........so i decided to source some of the USA made ones. When they arrived , I noticed that they were identical in construction to the original 820S I had except for the fact that they are slightly shorter ??????

The Taiwanese alternatives have round entry holes and a very cheap looking black silicone valve.........but they are the same size.

The new FL-820S has the same oval entry holes and orange silicone valve as the old FL-820S........from the underside, they look identical.

The box also states , new design same performance.

I would love to see a cutaway of the old v new 820S to see if its just the casing that is different or if there is indeed a change in the filter media inside as well ???????

Given that the filter is just a *bit* smaller and still made by Purolator from all I know, I can't imagine that there is any real difference in performance.

For the record, though, besides my E150, I have a Subaru Forester, and when Subaru's OEM changed from the black (highly regarded) Japanese Tokyo Roki filters recently to the new blue ones--which are made by Fram--I did buy a dozen of the old ones.

Change in manufacture and design, especially going from a high quality filter to Fram, is clearly a reason I'd want to hoard (and did), but I just don't see a need to stock up on old FL820S's...

George

George certainly makes a good point. In that situation, I'd have to say I agree. If the old filters were really that good, and the new ones were more typical mainstream filters, then that would make sense.

I have a couple FL 820 S oil filters at the moment, and I saw a recent post about Baldwin oil filters. For my 1996 F250 with 5.8, I looked up the oil filter out of curiosity on Baldwin's website, it would be a B329. It would be 9.8 microns nominal, 27 absolute.
