Ok I posted on the Bronco II forum but I am not satisfied with the answer I got. I have a '88 Bronco with a 2.9 and the AL4D tranny. Three weeks ago the tranny went out. I found a deal on a recently rebuilt tranny at a junkyard. We installed it. The transsmission shifts like a dream. But when you let off the throttle the rpms fall back to 1000 or so. It is running around 3000 rpms at 60 mph. Is this normal.
the response I have gotten is that the tranny is bad. the person i got it from is a long time freind so i trustr him
Any help is greatly appreciated
I am at a lost on this one

Not so much a bad tranny, maybe a bad torque converter. I know my reason for running a Ford automatic was for the engine braking, and when working right, they are awesome. Did you change out the T/C when you changed the tranny? You probably should have just flushed yours and re-used it.
3K at 60 mph sounds more like it doesn't have overdrive. Overdrive is .75 to 1 and gives a big change in rpm. Torque converter locking up would only account for about 300. Try this when going down the road at a steady 60. Keep your foot steady on the gas. With left foot, gently pres on the brake. Just enough to turn on the brake lights. This will disengage the torque converter and the rpm will jump. If so then the TC is ok. I don't know why people go to junk yards. These transmissions are so easy to work on. After it is out of the car, few things are as easy to work on as an overdrive problem.
put the transmission in manual (1), point it down a fairly steep hill from a stop, foot off the brake, no gas and let the engine do the braking. Engine should tach up to 2-3K with obvious engine braking.
