What trannys go with a 300? I would like to know for sure and certain which ones fit the engine, regardless of the vehicle. (Just give me a list)
Also, there seems to be two versions of the c6 bell housing. Are there different terms to describe them?
I am capable of making neccesary mods to fit so pull out all the stops and just spill the beans folks. I am looking for a baseline and will ask more and tell more later.
Well I know that my ol' SROD is getting worn pretty thin. Is there any way to get a T5 under there? If so, how hard would it be? I really like that transmission, and found a good one for $350!

ANY trans/bellhousing that will fit a small block (289,302,351W,351C) will fit the 300 six, as it uses the same 6 bolt pattern, choices would be C4,C6(small bellhousing)(EXPENSIVE$$),FMX, AOD(4speed)and various 3,4,5 speed manuals, this is provided the correct flywheel for the 300 is used.
Chris, bolting that T-5 in shouldn't be a big broblem, you might have to do something with your driveshaft legnth. Only thing I can think of is the shifter, you'd probably have to make up something that'd be long enough for truck use.

Can you say Pre-Runner??
I think the T-5 shift tower from a Mustang T-5 is way too far back to fit in a pickup. When they do a 5.0 conversion in a Ranger, they use a GM T-5 which has the shift tower further forward. Might work in an F-150, might not.
it is a truck, put in a truck transmission. they are stronger and are set up for shifter location if it is a manual.
auto tranny's are easy to adapt if 2wd.
Do you mean to imply that I can put any tran in?
Like I said, I want a baseline to choose from.
I like the idea of a manual tran for my truck (70 f100)but I would like to be able to hiway cruise w/o high rpm's.
My background is mostly japanese 5 speed manuals and I think these are highly efficient and reliable. But there are so many more options for Fords that I just don't understand the language yet. Is there a reliable and reasonably priced 4 or 5 speed for these old trucks?
On the other hand, an automatic would be easier for me to install since the truck is already set up for it. What would be the best choice w/ od?
Oops, my bad, the T-5 has a different bellhousing bolt pattern than the SROD(SROD is bigger.) The SROD is the same as any other truck tranny, and the Tremec 5 speed. But as for shifter location, the SROD uses a tailshaft mounted shifter, and it is in about the same place as a T-5's shifter.

You have an automatic in it now? It's probably a smallblock C-6, which is a 3-speed. If you want to go to an OD automatic, an E4OD is the correct way to go. Only problem is it's controlled by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) which you don't have. There are stand-alone controllers available, contact http://www.baumannengineering.com/ It might be possible to adapt an AOD (early model with cable/vacuum controls) to the 300, but it may not be strong enough without some major internal rework. The experts on AODs are at http://www.artcarr.com/.
If you want to go manual, your 5-speed truck options are: the SROD, which is no longer manufactured, but was at one time used in trucks; the current M5OD, which is a much-despised Mazda-designed POS; the ZF a very heavy duty 5-speed used in F-250s and up which has an overdrive 5th but a creeper 1st, so it's effectively a 4 speed unless you trailer.
The T-5 and the Tremec and primarily Mustang transmissions, which are strong enough, but were never fitted to the trucks, so you're more or less on your own or looking for comercially available tranny mounts, shifters and clutch linkage kits.
