My truck is currently in the body shop and I was wondering if i should go with the chrome bumper or paintable? Im tryin to go for a "sportier" look but IMO both look good
I like the chrome, if keeps some of the original feel of the era.
However, painted front and rear contour (see my gallery) would look more sporty and would be sweet. Just sand blast them prior to painting for best adhesion.
Better yet would be a rear roll pan and custom front air dam.
If your state doesn't require front plates, filling the area where the plate is recessed with another section of bumper would look killer painted. I am contemplating doing this myself. It's just a matter of cutting out the recessed area and welding in pieces from the ends of another bumper. It would really smooth out the front end IMO.
Both do look good - I think the painted bumper lets the grill and bezels look bolder/sharper. For me, the painted seems a little more sportier. I am leaning towards painting mine, but I am also doing a roll pan which is part of the influence.
If you are looking for original, (which it doen't look like it).
Chrome Front Bumpers were standard on F-100/F-350 pickups.
Painted Argent front Bumpers were standard on F-350 Chassis Cabs.
Black Painted front and contour rear Bumpers were standard on the XLS models of 1982 fame.

If you are looking for customized looks, I'd leave it chrome, it sets off and draws the eye to the wheels and grille. The painted bumper seems to draw the eye toward the fenders.
