1. undo rear hatch handle with 2 T25 torx bolts..
2. plastic off around back window, held in by clips.
3. push tab of actuator to release it from rear hatch mecanism
4. unplug connector and remove.
lots of room to work back there.. much easier then the door actuators.
i repaired mine, it didnt need it though, as i found out later the locking mechanism is binding up.. so i will have to take that out another time to evaluate it to repair..
heres some pictures
here is the actuator.
here is he actuator drilled and pried apart with the front 2 rivits still connectred togeather.
here is the motor apart with the rectangle silver thing removed and ready to be wrapped in tinfoil.
motor part wrapped in tinfoil and installed, and ready to be put back togeather.
back togeather with 1 bolt and superglue on all the drilled pegs and seam
rear hatch actuator area.. never mind all my dirty dusty parts!! hehe
the peg thats binding on mine causing it not to lock!
Easier for you than for me. I was working on this last night as well and could not figure out how to get the actuator out. I decided to try to get the motor out while it was still in there and it broke the housing. I might try to fix it and glue/strap it back together anyway rather than buying new.
My key does not work either though. I need to test it with the actuator out. Seems like the key turns but there is so much play that it does not do anything although this may be because the actuator seemed to have the mechanism stuck.... Ran out of time.

Thanks for posting.
ya i broke the last one prying to much, i just superglued the area around the rivits and put and additional bolt up by that end, and it still working good.
ya my key only goes in the key hole maybe 1/2 the keyd portion of the key, i sprayed the heck out of it yesterday with pbblaster so we will see if it will let me put the key in it further tonight when my wife gets home from work with it.
After looking at the broken actuator, I decided to buy a new one since I also broke the attachment clip. It is only $50 so one is not so bad. If I had to buy all them, that would be another story.
dang it no matter how much pbblazer i cant get my key all the way in that dang rear keyhole!!! i even had a small scredriver in ther etrying to losen the tumblers up! anyone know if theres somthing special with they key locks?
That peg that activates the lock was stuck on mine as well. I sprayed some penetrating lubricant in and around all of that stuff and after about 20 minutes of working it with my hands and then keys and some more lubricant, I got it loose.
Then I tried to install the new OEM actuator that I got from Ford. It looked a little different. I installed it and it did not have enough throw to push the pin far enough to lock it.
Therefore, I went back to the origonal actuator that I broke and decided to use some glue and tie straps and the tin foil mod and see if it would work. Amazingly, it did.
So I take back the actuator today and they won't give my cash back unless it is returned the same day. I told them a bit of my mind about that. They are supposed to send me a check.
Anyway, all my locks are working now with he only cost being a tiny bit of tin foil and some lubricant. Awesome.
Now on to shocks, ball joints, tie rods and sway bar connections to eliminate the shaking. Then a balance and alignment.
well if you cant get past that step you might want to take it to a mechanic.
its more about discovery when finding the way to remove the panel, pry here and pry there, see if it gives in any certain spot..
I got it off from top down. Thanks.
Still need to get part out.
While in there anyone know how difficult it is to take the "outside" plastic which surrounds the handle and lock off. MIne is all weathered. Thought about replacing.
