trans experts please tell me the difference in the 76 and newer c6 versus the older than 76 ones. i have a 78 and i have another one that i dont know what its out of. the one i have has spines cast into the top of the bellhousing area where the 78 doesnt. are their major differences inside? i have the tag, where can i cross the numbers? i guess if its like ford engine components the tag should tell the year.
The friction material and clutch plates are different. I think I remember some thrust bearings and planet assemblies may be different. Before May 1976 used type F fluid and after use Dexron/Mercon.

The semi-metallic friction plates (they look black) use type F, the others that use the paper frictions (they look light brown and obviously paper) use the Dexron/Mercon.
The C6 went through various upgrades throughout the years ranging from case castings to the internal components, and some parts can not be mixed as they will not fit or work.
I preferred the Semi-metallic as I believe they can handle the heat a little better than the paper.
