I remember the days when a station wagon with a big block would tow about anything you needed.

The 300/C6 combo will try to pull anything you put behind it, what matters is the rest of the truck. What axle/gear ratio do you currently have? Remember you have a 1/4 ton truck, not a 1/2 ton. The were different as far as some of the suspension and frame goes, you have smaller spindles, bearings and such.

for example in 86 a F150 with a 300 a/t and 3.55 rear had a GCWR (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight) of 9000 lbs, with a max trailer weight of 2000 pounds, with the trailer frontal sq footage not exceeding the frontal area of the truck, and that is on a 1/2 ton. yours could very well be less. If someone has an owners manual for your year, it should be in there under towing. You take the GCWR minus the GVWR and that is your max trailer load, according to Ford.

The above info i from the 1986 owners manual

Well I have a 81 F100 also and it has the 4 speed manual with overdive and the owners manual says I can not pull a tralier at all. Guess I should have read that earlier since I have always towed small utility type trailers.

"CAUTION--Vehicles equipped with 4-speed overdrive manual transmissions must not be used for trailer towing".

I have included some info I have here and the original sticker from my truck which should look pretty close to yours. Maybe you can use some of this.

Hey thanks for the info so what i took from it is that the 81 f-100 custom can tow around 2,000 if you dont get the cooling package and i also run 31x10.5 tires.Sometimes i push it closer to 2,500lbs with towing single axle 15' travel trailer and a couple of 225lbs dirtbikes and dont have any problems just got to know when to leave in 3rd gear and climb up hill slow
