Stereo Opening Size?

Hello,

I have a 99 expy and I can't seem to find any aftermarket a/v/nav units that fit directly into the opening. All I see are the flip-up screen style and I'm not a big fan of those.

What size opening does the expy have? I'm pretty sure that there are a ton of other Ford vehicles that have that same size opening.
There has to be something out there that fits without having to use a single-DIN unit with filler plates. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places?

I already tried the search...I think there's something wrong with it today because no matter what I typed in, it brought up a bunch of threads about exhaust and ball joints. ???

if your okay with cutting the dash you can make any double din deck fit.

Single din is about 2" tall and double din is about 4" tall. Both are around 7" wide. If yours is more than 3.25", you have a double din opening. It may take some work to fit an aftermarket double din because ford doesn't always make square holes.

There are/were some "DIN 'n a Half" units out on the market for this very reason. I'll have to check through my previous orders/catalogs to see if I can dig up models.

Or you can do some minor modding to your center bezel to get a double-din to work... as said above.

On Edit: most "high-end" Loaded can cost more than a double din.

Thanks guys,

I'm not afraid to do a little shaving so I guess I'll have to go that route.

Kinda strange there aren't more 1 1/2 DIN offerings considering how many Fords with that opening there must be out there (vans, trucks, suvs, minivans etc).

Din and a half was a Chrysler size. Very few vehicles (comparably) were produced with that opening, so there are more options for the more common single and double din. Ford used either double or single din, putting a 1.5 in will require an install kit with either a spacer or really skinny pocket.

Are you sure??

Every source I've seen/talked to/read regarding the stereo size in any Ford from about 97-04ish says that it's 1 1/2 DIN and that a double DIN won't fit without some modification. I've even seen firsthand an '02 F150 and a '98 Ranger (same opening) where they've had to enlarge the opening to fit a double DIN unit in there. Every dealer/shop says that a double DIN won't fit and tells me I have to go with a single DIN.

Maybe the newer style trucks/suv's are double DIN, but I'm all but positive that my expy and nearly every other Ford from 97ish until they changed to the current style is 1 1/2 DIN.

If you talk from a corp. point of view it technically is a dbl din or ISO stacked. Metra and Scosche both had din'n a half kits. I may still have a few that would fit the '97 and up Rangers and Expl.
Reax does bring up a slight concern... I've never seen a din'n a half kit for the Expys. Only Rangers and Expl... (for some reason I thought the OP was referring to the Explorer)
