I used to have an '02 Explorer and miss that truck so much, even though every day was filled with slight dread while waiting for the tranny to go out since I heard that's the main problem with them.
Anyways, I'm looking to get a used Expy but need advice. For the same price ($6500) I can get a '98 Expy with about 121k miles or a '99 Expy with about 164k. Both are Eddie Bauer editions, not sure of the engine size. What are the main differences between these 2 years and what should I be on the lookout for when test driving this weekend? I've driven the '99 already and have had my mechanic check it out with a clean bill of health minus a slightly leaky left rear axle seal.
I priced the '99 on kbb.com and it came out to be exactly on the money for private party listing price in good condition for my location (Minot, ND). Where did you find yours?? I would love to pay less and have less miles on the engine!
I've heard they have problems with coil packs as well, same as the F150 I'm sure.
97-98 have the older style grill, 99 will be the newer grill, I think they also got a digital odometer, and 99 IIRC is the first year for the PI motor which may be 20hp or somthing more than the 98.
The price seems a little high for the miles on both trucks, I have a 2000 with 86k miles and I got it for $4500. Mine isn't a Eddie Bauer though, but it is the 5.4 and 4x4.
If you live in a snowy area where they salt the roads watch the rear lower trailing arms. They rust out and when they break they can take out your driveshaft etc... blend door goes bad, spark plugs can eject but, they are great vehicles. I would keep looking for 99 and up they have the more powerful engines, and try for lower mileage 164k for 6500 is a little steep not unless it is in excellent condition and has some service records.
I bought my 97 for $3500 w/ 107,000. While other members have gotten seemingly better deals for newer models, this one was in the family, garaged its entire life, and very well maintained by the previous owners.
I think the amount being asked is high. Get underneath and look for excessive rust. If you are unsure, snap some photos and post them here and there are plenty of members to assist.
Just picked up my "new to me" 1998 EB Expy 5.4 with the tow package and 152K on it for $2700 just 2 weeks ago and there was a bunch to choose from in my area that were very similar all around 3K. And so far im lovin my Expy.
