I have a 2003 F350 with the 6.0 and Torqshift auto and recently I had the tranny temp spike and have the check gauges light come on. The tow/haul light was also flashing.
At the time when this happened I was just driving across town without a load, I touched the pan and there was no way the temp was anywhere near what the gauge was reading???
I started the truck up the next morning, and the tranny temp gauge was already 1/4 of the way up just after starting and within 1 mile of driving the gauge pegged again and the tow/haul light began to flash with the check gauges light coming on too.
I would check the temp sender. Take wire off of sender and temp should go to cold. Ground sender wire and temp should peg to hot. This test will prove that your gauge is working properly. It might also be the gauge but is most likely the sender. Gauges rarely fail so i would start with the temp sender. Slap a new sender on there and hope for the best.
Do not have any real experiance with problems with the Torqshift auto but i do know they have a thermostat that controlls flow to the tranny cooler, is it possable that the thermostat failed closed causing no cooling loop and the tranny is actually overheating, again i do not have much knowladge just know what i have read. I guess you could use a infread heat gun and check pan and or cooler line temp. Just my .02 cents. Let us know what you find.

I'm kind of surprised to here that there's a thermostat for the transmission cooler. My ScanGuage monitors my engine and transmission temperatures. When it's cool out my transmission temperature runs cool (135-145) and it's warm out it will runs at a higher temperature. When I run with my fifth-wheel the transmission runs around 180 + or - 10 degrees. In contrast to the engine, which obviously has a thermostat, runs 190-195 all the time.
Same problem here, scanned it at Ford and I'm getting an intermittent high temp input from the sensor, It will take a few minutes for it to shift into OD on the highway sometimes and gives me a rough 1-2 and 2-3 shift sometimes. I've got a new sensor just haven't had the time to switch it out.

I see the same results when towing in warmer or cooler weather, the fluid never stays at a constant, i see 160 towing 12,000 in 50* but then see 180-190 during summer towing. But i know i have read on this post and was told by the dealer that is why you have to use a heated tranny flush machine to flush the tranny, if it is not heated the thermostat stays closed and you never full cycle the old fluid out of the cooler. Just my suggestion for what could be wrong. Again i have not had the pleasure to do any repair`s to the torque shift tranny, just going off little bits of info i have come across, hope it help`s. Maybe the thermostat is just like a bypass cooler, increases or decreases flow when needed, but their would always be a flow, kinda think their would have to be a constant flow to the cooler???? not really sure.

Where is the wire located? I belive the sending unit is on the valve body inside the tranny pan.
hey resting river ranch, i have exactly the same issue with my 2003 f350 within a 5 km trip the tranny temp will spike and town haul will flash, i know the tranny is not overheating i have hit a speedbump and my temperature went back to reading normal then spiked again o.O? just wondering weather you changed out the sending unit and if it was the problem thx
