428 PI starter

Merry Christmas. I am searching for a part number and hopefully a vendor for a starter for my 1970 428 Police Interceptor. It has the cable post sticking out the back, rather than the side. Otherwise the cable will get fried from the manifold. Thanks. Kirt

The same 3 hole starter was used on all 1965/76 FE engines, Passenger Car or truck, A/T or M/T

While that's great information, Bill (ND), after all these years, you do have to be careful about the number of teeth. I've come across two different pitches on FEs.

184-tooth flywheel, and 153. Of course, the 153 is probably FT but things do happen over the years.

Are you looking for completely stock show car starter replacement? Or anything that'll work? A "peanut" (PMGR) starter wouldn't be a bad idea in this application.

Thanks. No, it is not a show car project. It's my work truck. I still need to get some pictures to problem-solve the situation, but my mechanic's plan, right now, is to have this starter rebuilt. For the future, I would like to know how to replace it. The cable post on the back is a definite advantage to the side-mount style with those cast iron headers almost touching the starter.

I think if you went to a starter rebuilder, they would either just rebuild what you have to better than anything else you could find as a replacement, or they could just setup a unit with the cable attachment on the end.

I researched a bit, and find reference to the fact that later starters (after 1977) moved the cable to the end plate. Now, I'm not sure about the Bendix gear being correct, or depth being correct, or anything else, but a good "starter guy" should be able to figure all that out.

The best view I could get of that rear-mounted connection is:

I said 1965/76, because the flywheel or flexplate has 184 teeth.

1958/64 FE engines (only installed in cars) have 153 tooth flywheels or flexplates, and thru 1962, the starter uses the massive Bendix inertia starter drive.

The FE starter actually changed in 1963, but today inre to 1963/64, who knows if the starter is the 1958/62 version or the 1963/76 version.

There were no FE engines after 1976.

I'd say someone put a FE three bolt back on a later 302 starter.

Destroked nailed it. The starter guy confirmed that is has a heavier armature than original, probably 302 or 351. And that moved the contact point from the side, to the back. $105 for the rebuild, using 2 starters. I wish I could take credit for idea on the conversion, but it was the previous owner. That copper post had to be very efficient at transferring heat from the headers directly into the armature. Unless someone knows of a problem this creates, I am going to have this conversion done on the 390 that my mechanic is now building. It has Sanderson shortie headers, and heat on that starter is a huge issue. Thanks for your help. Merry Christmas. Kirt

If you've ever had to replace a starter on a 428CJ with headers you'd want the end post starter as well, that old side stud was near impossible to get a wrench on and was about 1/2" from one of the tubes on the Hooker headers I used.
Wish the end post starter had been available when I had the car.
