I think early 80's Mustang and Capri came with a 2v aluminum intake on the HO engines before they put 4v on them (82-84?)
Funny, I just got a pair of MAC mustang headers for my 351w swap. I mocked up some stock tubular manifolds and they look like they will just barely clear on the pass side between the bell housing and the frame using a 2 1/4" pipe. A good (and very cheap) source for the flared pipe and flange in 2 1/4" is the stock connection on a 86-04 mustang where the h-pipe connects to the 'cat-back'.
well i ended up finding an '89 Mustang 302 for WAY less then rebuilding the truck motor i had. Been gathering parts, cleaning, scrubbing, degreasing, and installing them. This is what i ended up with.
'89 Mustang 5.0HO / roller motor
Edlebrock Performer 289 Aluminum intake
holley 4160 - 600 CFM carb
BBK Ceramic Coated shorty's (will probably sell to fund Flowtech or Hedman ceramic coated Long tubes)
Will be putting stock manifolds and Y pipe on just to get it running, i want to end up with ceramic coated long tubes, no cats, and hush thrush mufflers.
I should be pulling the six this weekend and thoroughly cleaning the engine compartment. Hopefully dropping the new motor in next weekend.
After the motor project will be pulling the bed off and starting body work / primer.
well...tried to put the plugs i bought for an '89 Mustang GT 5.0HO (the year of mustang the motor came out of) in to heads and they didnt fit, pulled one of them out and took it back to where i bought those plugs and matched them up...turns out the motor does have 94/95 Cobra (gt40) heads on it!!!!!!!!!!!!! When i went to look at the motor i was told it had GT40's on it, but i couldn't find any numbers on them to verify, even after pulling the valve covers! They are marked just like any other e6/e7 head, but i couldnt find a casting number. Explorer gt40 / gt40p heads have gt40 or gtp cast into them, these dont.
so heres the run down:
'89 HO block, crank, pistons, rods, roller cam
SN Cobra heads
edlebrock performer 289 aluminum intake
holley 4160-600CFM 4V
1" carb spacer (4 hole)
'68 mustang water pump (inlet on passenger side, so i can use my 300 radiator)
68-73 mustang timing pointer
'83 truck timing cover
'81 F100 motor mounts
'83 F150 frame perches
'83 C6 flex plate
'89 Mustang balancer
'83 F150 water neck (points straight up)
'80 Bronco 7 blade mechanical fan
'81 F150 302 shroud
'81 F150 throttle cable
14x3" air cleaner (going to trade out lid for 289 HIPO lid w/302-4v sticker)
'68 mustang power steering bracket modified for truck pump
'68-73 mustang alternator bracket
'83 truck crank / water pump pullies (v-belts)
exhaust will be:
ceramic coated long tubes (i like the way they look)
thrush mufflers
2x passenger side tail pipes (one will be cut and flipped for driver side)
so the whole waterpump thing didnt work out....felt kinda like alice, dropping down the rabbit hole. So i bought a truck water pump, radiator, hoses, etc. Apparently the '68 mustang pump has the water pump shaft 1" lower then the truck one, so none of my pully's fit. I couldn get any of the brackets to line up either.
So a few progress pics:
ready to pull...
lots of room...
yup, she's in there...
Now the bad news...
Something happened after installation went smoothly. I went to rotate the motor back to TDC and the crank wouldn't turn. So we began to loosen the bell housing bolts and heard a "pop", and the motor began to turn. Went to torque everything back down and heard a big "POP" and found a broken bell housing. So at some point this week its all coming back out to figure out what the heck happened.
I've looked at doing an AOD swap now, but dont want to deal with the TV adjustments. New crossmember and driveshaft. So, i'm looking for another SBF C6.
Just need to sell off some of these spare parts so i can buy one....
