I will be installing my larger tru cool tranny cooler this weekend finally and just wondering if anyone had some last minute tips/ideas.
Any easy places to mount it, I don't have an intercooler so I'm thinkin I'll have room to work wtih.

You should have plenty of room. Make sure your cooler can with the needed fitting for the inlet and outlet. Mine was missing one. The bag was sealed just not packaged correctly.

If you are using the thermal break (thermostat) scratch all the port IDs onto the main body of the stat. The markings have a bad habit of disappearing when touched.

How long should it take me start to finish?

Also when I undo the stock tranny cooler and lines, how much fluid will come out?

Hmmm, 30 minutes probably. If the transmisssion is cool, you'll only lose what's in the cooler. Take off the top one, seal teh cooler, then pinch the bottom one and cut it. You'd probably lose a couple of ounces.

Are these thermostat's reliable? Can they stay closed and not allow flow to the cooler? I installed mine without it but cleaning out my garage I found it and was thinking about putting it in. My trans will run cool at times which is probably not good. Glenn

Glenn, I agree, too cold can't be good. Before I installed the therm, the temps would take 20-30 miles to get up to 160º and then continue to climb. Now it gets up to temp within 5-10 miles.
Mines about 2 years old now and it seems to be doing fine. AFAIK it's fail safe. It's always open to the radiator cooler or the air cooler or somewhere in between, depending on the oil temp. I plumbed mine through the rad cooler, then out to the air cooler.

I think I need a thermostat. The original owner of the truck put in a HUGE cooler and it never comes up to temp in the winter when the truck is empty. The temperature stays around 120ºF going down the freeway.

How many are running the cooler through the radiator first?
I'm thinking about bypassing the radiator mine. I think the radiator cooler may actually be hurting. Last summer I had the perfect example. It was a 6% grade gaining 3000 feet with gentle enough curves that I never let up. The transmission sat in drive the whole time with the throttle to the floor. The converter was locked and in drive all three planetaries are locked together so there is no heat generated in the transmission save for bearing friction. The temperature climbed up to 210ºF anyways. That heat had to be coming out of the radiator exchanger.

IMO 120º is a bit low. Like most other mechanical stuff...they have a design operating temp.

My understanding is that when the TC is locked is when the most heat is generated. Lugging it up a 6% grade will make all the temps rise. ATF, Coolant & EGT's

Not many here bypass the radiator cooler. Running it through there will aide in warm up times. Besides, the bottom of our rads (where the cooler lives) is much cooler than the engine temp. My WAG is, it doesn't get much over 190º even when working it hard.

I still use the rad cooler as well then out to the air to air with the thermo bypass in between just like Jim's.

Jim the TC unlocked it where much of the heat is generated. When its locked it creates less heat. Slipping creates heat and when the TC is not locked thats all it does is slip. Not like a clutch though.

Tim, First of all I don't know much about Auto trannies so I try to remember info from this site. The e4 is a different animal from other lock-up trans.
Take look below: an unresolved discussion between Mark Kovalski and Bill (madvan), these guys DO know about trannys.

Jim I don't know about cooler flows. I just meant that transmission CREATES more heat when the tc is UNLOCKED. I don't about the cooling changes.

Tim, The article that Bill posted was about heat I thought?
It said something about the difference from a 4r to e4 TC lock up.
