My overdrive light started blinking on and off. It still shifts in and out of overdrive with the button, however the light continues to blink. What does this mean? I have to use the truck today to drive 400 miles and will not be able to service it until tomorrow. Is this a risk?
-Some say its caused by a bas vss sensor on the rear end that causes this, some say its a chaffed wire in the steering column.
Mine does this from time to time despite replacing the vss with a QUALITY one from NAPA as recommended here....most say the oem ones are not as good as the NAPA replacement.
You might try turning the engine off and re-starting it-when mine does this this is what I do amd I'm good for quite a while.
You might also try unplugging the wire from the sensor on top of the rear end housing and use ELECTRICAL PARTS CLEANER LIBERALLY on it as well....
Just trying to help get ya on the road..........mine shifts a little weird when the light is blinking...
Then there are those of us who really know why it's blinking. It is blinking because there is a problem with the transmission system. The PCM has set a code to tell the tech what's wrong. The light blinks to alert the driver that there is a problem and a code is stored. It could be the VSS, or about 50 other things, too. It almost certainly is not a chafed wire in the steering column.
In order to find out what's wrong you need to get the codes read. The places that read codes free CANNOT read these codes. You'll need to pay an independent shop or a Ford dealer to read them for you.
As for driving it 400 mile like this, it may not cause a problem or it may destroy the transmission. The ONLY way to know is to get the codes read.
