Ford Excursion will take off in overdrive, takes off correctly when OD is turned off

Hi everyone!

I am new to this forum and would like to thank everyone ahead of time for looking at this and offer me some help.

I am looking to buy this excursion that has an odd issue with the transmission.

When I go to start the SUV, put it in drive and take off, it is very sluggish (feels like it is taking off in overdrive)
When I click the OD button off, it takes off as usual. Once up to speed, I can turn OD back on, and all is well.

What do you think the issue is? THe transmission performs correctly, not too worried about this being a real expensive fix.

I am looking to buy it tomorrow.

Thanks again!
Chris

I would walk away unless you are prepared to put a new transmission in it. You didnt say what year you are looking at but I can almost assure you its going to need a rebuild and convertor.

Torque converter lock out solenoid maybe. Or OD solenoid? It seems to be something electrical not mechanical. You'd have to take it to a really good trans shop though. Most would probably want to rebuild like the other poster said.

Don't forget there's a factory recall on the OD system. Take it to the local Ford dealer and get it replaced for free.

If you think you're going to need a rebuilt tranny...factor in $4,500 for a BTS or John Wood transmission. It's worth the extra $1k or so to do that over a factory rebuild.
