That's not really true either, while they do have a relationship 8 ply doesn't equal D or E. They go either way, just like Tom Cruise.

The only numbers or ratings that only truely matter are the weight ratings on the tire in lbs. The manufacture has to prove and test these ratings, they don't with any others, the rest are just marketing.

Please don't say my mechanic is ignorant. I have had him work on my vehicles for over 10 years. He is an extremely honest person and looks out for your best interests. He feels that the bigger sidewall on the E is necessary. He also feels if Ford motor thought D was the correct tire it would say that somewhere. I do not get how the two tires D and E are rated the same for wieght at 3195, I just looked it up on BFG. That seems strange.

they're rated the same weight at different PSI.
Ignorant is defined as " lacking knowledge or comprehension of the thing specified"

it does according to this chart

Still I will say yet again, The only rating or number that truely counts is the tires weight rating in pounds, this is tested and is not some arbitrary code.

Like it even says in your article, there is no true "ply rating' anymore. Ply rating is a throw back to the days of bias ply tires. Todays radials hold there pressure and shape with just a few "plys". These days they market a ply rating based loosely on the tires weight capacity, and that's all. It all comes from the tires tested load capacity, so we need just pay attention to that number.

Well I got the tires replaced today to the E load range. What a difference in the handling of the truck. The tire man did not charge me a dime, as though he knew he sold me wrong tires. I was surprised at how much more responsive the truck handles now, not sloppy like the D load. I now see why E tires are the recommended tire for this truck. Thanks for everyone's help on this issue. I also appreciate the different perspectives that were brought up, even if you did not agree with the E load tires.

That is the exact same thing we noticed on our work truck. Here is a link that might explain things a little better. Still nothing official but I think it is a good explanation of tire load ratings with a chart.
