Hey guys i have a 1978 f100 with a 351w truck looks and drives new two days ago i had a oil change for a 300 mile trip well today on the way home from work i went to pass a car and alot of white smoke came out for 2 secs then there was a bad tapping coming from the top of engine i got home checked oil , there was no oil in engine, i added oil and now the tapping noise you can barely hear. The truck is not leaking oil and it does not smoke at all except for 2 secs earlier. I have checked pcv valve and it clicks when i put my finger on it, now there is a little filter on the other valve cover that was covered in oil , it was clean yesterday. Anyone have a ideal what is going on with my engine? Thanks sgt batten us army
White smoke in the exhaust generally indicates water/coolant being burned - could be head gasket failure. You might check your radiator for oil and check your oil after some operation to see if you notice a milky appearance.
Also, a PCV valve can rattle and still not function properly as far as sealing when necessary. Doesn't cost much at all to replace.
a shop did the oil change i showed me the dip stick when they were done, there is a leak at the rear main seal, truck is still not smoking so i am hoping the trip to fl caused the oil to come out the rear main seal, the tapping at top of engine is very minimal. i hoping i dont have to replace engine, also oil looks fine no milky color, and water in rad is green (normal) so do you guys think it could be the rear main seal? and if so do yall know if it is a 1 piece or two piece seal ?
the dummy gage does not work, if i buy a after market one where does the copper tube go to in the engine? thanks guys im not the smartest person when it comes to mechanics.......
Correct me if I'm wrong here guys, I've never worked with a Winsor yet, but all the other ford V8's I've had, had the sending unit at the back of the engine on top. Should be the only thing there behind the intake manifold. One wire hook up. Take out the sender, put a Tee fitting in line, then reatach the new gauge tube and a new sender too- they are cheap enough. Double cheap insurance that way. I use plastice gauge lines because I've heard that copper cracks easier from vibration.
well i am going to replace engine or rebuilt it is tapping loud again autozone wants 1200 dollars for a rebuilt that sucks i just bought the truck for 1800 . i will keep you guys updated...........
