axle "Pig" question
My friend has a 03 F-150 5.4 auto 4x4 with 3.55 with non limited slip. the offroad shop near our house has a 07 f-150 5.4 auto 4x4 limited slip rearend unit. now the question is the 07 axle was 9.75 it had 3.73 gears the custemer replaced that with a truetrac and 4.56s. now my friends rear axle is 9.75 are they inter-changeable? will the unit just bolt into the 03? the offroad shop said it would or should. it is just the "pig" does it matter that it had 3.73 and going to be bolted to 3.55s? and will axle shafts going to be the right lengh for the clips? All constuctive input is appreciated. Thanks

It will not bolt right into the 2003. The `04 and later models have the shocks mounted differently, outside of the spring pads. This alone makes the axle assembly different enough that it will not be a bolt in. You can't use the 3.73 gears without changing the gears in the front differential to match them. Good luck!

the 07 is just the limited slip unit no gears its just a factory ford LS unit no axle or axleshafts. Itis just a ring gear that makes it a limited slip. can my friend take "guts" out of his 03 take the ring gear off rebolt it to the 07 LS and put it back together and fit. Or are the insides of the rear diff diffrent.

The differential carrier is what the ring gear bolts to. It will be different between the limited slip version to the non-limited slip version. These would be interchangeable among 9.75 differentials to upgrade from non-limited slip to limited slip. The swap should be done by the offroad shop so that the gears are set up correctly for proper wear of the gears. Good luck!

yeah he has a friend that works a tranny/diff shop who is convently at disneyland. i went and got parts for my truck and he inquired about a positrac unit. and the owner said he had that o7 unit and he would sell it to my friend for 50.00. if it would fit.
