I am posting this for a friend. He purchased a 2004 screw FX4 with the 5.4L 3 valve engine. He discovered recently that his rear axle is probably toast. The pinion has visible end float and it is noisey as all getout. The axle code is H9 which is supposed to be 3.73 limited slip. As near as he can tell it is the 9.75" axle, but after removing the rear cover to allow axle removal to see if the wheel bearings were bad, he discovered it is not a limited slip. In trying to locate a used axle we are being asked if it is a "new edge" truck. What is the difference and is there a way to determine exactly what is in it? Carfax showed no significant repairs. Thanks,
I think what they are asking is if it's the new body style. In 2004, Ford produced both the Heritage (old body style- PN96) and the new body style. That's the only thing I can think of as new edge. Shock mountings are different, so it is important to get the correct axle. Have him check his door code under axle and that will tell for sure what axle it's suppose to be. It's a 2 digit code and if you post back, someone will tell you what it's suppose to be. I wonder if the original owner had work done on the axle...
It does sound like they are talking about what body style he has. Where did you get the H9 axle code from. A quick search on it shows that it should have 3.55 LS gears, but it also shows that it should be an older 8.8.

Update, first as stated in my post, it is code H9, second, it is a super cab, not screw, I was working from memory on the body style. I went over yesterday evening and we verified 3.73 ratio, pulled the cover and found it is a limited slip, owner was only familiar with the 8.8 limited slip and saw no preload spring, so assumed it was not a limited slip. It is a 9.75 axle and ring and pinion are not damaged. He ordered pinion bearings, crush sleeve and seal. We will replace them next week after they arrive. As near as we can tell, it is a new edge truck. I think we have a handle on it, thanks for the replies.
97-04: front fenders are rounded and look like vehicles from 30's
04+: front fenders are squared, and the doors have the superduty cutout by the mirrors
Junkyard...easier IMO than messing with gear offset and backlash and all the other mysterious arts of the rear axle
2004 Fx4 came standard with LS and 3:73 on a 9.75 rear if i recall. In 04 the Heritage retained the old style, but was not available in the FX4 version.
Update, no luck finding an axle. We pulled it down Monday (FWIW, I have built a number of different rear ends including MG, and brand C), and found biggest noise source was right side carrier bearing. New bearings and set it up, rolled a pattern and it looked real good. There is a slight noise cruising at 40-45mph which was the speed that created the most noise before. Owner said not bad, it is in the minor annoyance level and can be ignored by having a normal radio volume level. Apparently there is a little gear set damage from the bad bearings, and we did flush everything and clean the ABS sensor. Thanks for the input from all who replied, this group is awesome for information!
