I have an 05 F250 4X4 with an auto transmission. I just got around to changing the transmission filter. I know what you are thinking, but I am in the Army and I am away from home alot. So my 05 only has 38,000 miles on it. I dropped the pan and changed out the filter, put the pan back on and put the 17 and 1/2 quarts of fluid in it like the book calls for. It was pouring fluid from the back end when I ran it thru the gears. I went to the parts store (which is a pain in the *** because the nearest town to the base I am on is 38 miles away). I got some good old red hi temp silicone and went around the gasket and let it sit overnight. I put more fluid in it and cranked it up for the same thing to happen to it. It is not leaking from the pan but somewhere above it. Does the trans have fluid in it still when you drain the pan and I just put too dmn much back in it, and does it have an overflow valve or something that will let excess fluid drain. Like i said it is a LONG way to a dealership and i don't want to drive it there if I don't have too.
Uh oh... The full system capacity is 19.2 quarts. When you just drop the pan you only lose about 7.5 quarts, so you have about 10 quarts too much in your tranny...
I would not run or drive it at all till you get that excess fluid out...
It is probably coming out the vent on top of the trans but it really doesn't matter. Hope all is well when you get the excess out.
PS. Just don't tell anybody it happened, we won't tell. We all have booboo'd at one time or another.
hoping the hell that is all it is. This isn't the first boo boo that I have made, but it is the first one with this truck.
Here's another one for ya!
The filter in the pan doesn't need to be changed until the trans is rebuilt. It's not that fine, and if enough stuff has clogged it, it's because the trans has already failed.
There is a filter on the passenger's side of the truck, just below the radiator. That filter needs to be changed, not the internal filter.
