I have a chance to buy a 4" exhaust w/muffler from a 99 F350, for my 03 F250 (both are short bed crew cabs) for $150. it's all one piece to the turbo. the truck was wrecked and the engine is out. i'm thinking this is a slip out of mine and slip in of the new one. any reason this is a bad idea? anyone have trouble going to a bigger exhaust before getting a chip or doing other work? I'm thinking by delaying i'm being an idiot
thanks for the suggestions. right now i am muffler/delete. maybe i should leave the one on the 4"? I heard some people say they've put the muffler back on.
Right now i'm getting 22 mpg on the highway, will this change (better-worse) with the 4" exhaust?
All one piece??? Can't see how you'd get it all in there without cutting it. If it's a mandrel bent system and not mangled by the wreck, go for it. Maybe you mean it's been welded together??
I have a 4 inch (exhaust that is). I put mine in myself and can't imagine it going in in one piece without dropping the rear axle. I put mine on without a chip and can't say it made much difference in MPG but it made me feel like it would. If it's in good shape you're gonna save a couple hundred dollars. Might be worth cutting and welding. Good luck
It is one piece because it is on the truck they welded it as it goes up to the turbo, and i'm sure it's welded at the muffler. slightly different pipe diameter than the beginning piece, but it's still large compared to my 3". I think they can pull it out the front (wrecked truck). When i call them and tell them i want it, I'll have them cut it at the muffler for me. yeah, i don't mind welding it, or paying for 1 weld if it saves me a few hundred bucks.
Stan, "but it made me feel like it would" so you're saying you noticed a big power gain with little or no MPG drop? that's what i want to hear

Thanks!
I could not drop my truck out of an airplane and get 22 MPG...Like others have said, sounds like a deal to me.Mine is clamped together, kit type.
Thanks Guy's (and Jade... and Chigger)... i told them to cut it at the muffler (in case i decide to delete. My current setup is muff/del. ordering my 6637 too. I'm on my way! (if i can ever get this "engine dying" issue solved...
hey, i notice a small heat shield on my curent exhaust down pipe. the one i have coming does not have one. Should i wrap it?

Reason: question

my 6637 is going to be ordered today.
I'll be honest, if you're getting 22 MPG that's a mileage I've never even dreamed about in my truck. I might get 17 on a long highway run without the trailer and it might have gone up 2 or 3 tenths when I put on the 4 inch exhaust and the 6637 filter but I couldn't swear to it. As for an increase in power, well most of the time I'm pulling a big 5er and I didn't notice that either. My truck is being maintained and modded for the long haul. I'm going for 300k miles and 15 years. Making it breathe eaiser seemed like a good idea. sorry but that's it.
well, who knows. maybe that tank is giving me trouble. i did fill it up a couple extra pumps after it said full. i ran 70 miles, re-filled and re-topped it off. maybe i just didn't get it full the second time. Love driving my truck (when it doesn't die) but seriosly, it wasn't as much fun keepin' her at 60.
