My 1989 F-250 w/11,xxx 460 EFI is puking coolant right after I shut it off. It appears to be from behind the water pump area as near as I can see. It doesn't leak coolant when running and the coolant temp gage reads normal. I do have a slight whine I thought was a serpentine belt needing replaced.
I am waiting for a call back from a mechanic for a water pump replacement. Does this sound like my water pump is going out to you? Thanks in advance.
IMO water can appear to come from just about anywhere. I have the same thing and for me the problem is a leaky head gasket near the firewall. Don't just ask for an estimate to replace the pump, ask them to identify exactly where the leak is coming from.
It sounds like the water pump..You need to look good with a flash light when its leaking...A preasure tester is good to use...Climb under there & have a look The noise you here could be the pump bearings...Lew
Thanks guys, I just got back from dropping it off at the mechanic (not dealership). He also thinks it is the water pump. That's the original from 1989 I think. I've had the truck twenty years so is hard to remember all that's been done over time.
Dave stated he would confirm the water pump issue by running a pressure check test first. Looks like it will be approx $ 180.00, ballpark pump and labor. Unless it needs the serpentine belt replaced.....which it probably will.
Does that sound reasonable?
EDIT: To correct myself from my first post. That should read approx 117,000 miles. Sometimes when I type my figers get stuck in my brain or something.

Hey,there Clay, Waterpump is easy on 460s, you can do that one yourself easy. Save your $$$, Heck drive it over here, I will change it for ya.

Easy for you to say!! It's not easy with just a an old screw driver, a shaky pair of vise grips and clothes hanger.
Wished you was just around the block but that's a far piece on a water pump about to go out. But it's the thought that counts....Thanks Dave!
Just be prepared to deal with the backing plate too if the coolant has been neglected
It hasn't. I haven't neglected anything on my ole red. That's why she's lasted twenty years and almost all of it hauling or towing something. And she is still straight and strong. But thanks of thinking of the tip on the back plate.
