Mercon V is the new rating that Ford has for it's tranny fluid requirements. I don't know what the difference is between Mercon and Mercon V (amount/type of additives?), but initially the big stink was that if you were supposed to use Mercon rated fluid, you should in no way ever use Mercon V. A while back Ford came out and said okay now you can use Mercon V (I don't remember the TSB number off hand). I think this was due to the fact that Ford was phasing out the Mercon rating and going with the Mercon V rating. There's still some old school thought out there that we can't use Mercon V in our rigs because it was such a hullaballoo. As long as it says that it's Mercon V rated, then you can use it (the Mercon rating has been phased out, although you may be able to find it on some old stuff).
If you can afford it, synthetic is always better than dino.

I was only going by the owners manual and would have stayed away from Mercon V had I not read your post. You probably saved me a ton of running around trying to find some old stock!
The 4R100 calls for a MERCON ATF spec Fluid. MERCON is no longer being supplied, MERCON V can now be used in vehicles that require either MERCON® V or MERCON® type fluid.
You can also use:
1. MERCON® V Automatic Transmission and Power Steering Fluid
MERCON® V Automatic Transmission and Power Steering Fluid
2. Motorcraft's Synthetic Blend MERCON® V Automatic Transmission
Synthetic Blend MERCON® V Automatic Transmission and Power Steering Fluid
If you tow or race I would go with a full synthetic since it can handle the higher temps better and last longer.
3. Schaeffer's 204SAT Synthetic Transmission fluid - what BTS uses in all their transmissions
Schaeffer's ALL-Trans Supreme Transmission Fluid for Dexron III and Mercon fluids
or
4. Amsoil Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid
AMSOIL Synthetic Automatic and Manual Transmission Fluid.
5. Amsoil Torque-Drive™ Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATD) - very expensive $45 a gallon retail IIRC
AMSOIL Torque Drive
IMO opinion paying $50 a gallon for Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc.... is not worth the extra $ for no performance gain. Compare the technical data sheets of the fluids and decide for yourself. You can easily save @ $20 a gallon. I use Schaeffer's 204SAT Synthetic Transmission fluid like BTS does in all their 4R100's. runs @ $115 for 5 gallons.
