I need diagnostic info. Wiring diagrams, pictures, what to test etc. Where are the relays located? I just purchased my 86 bII and the dash and everything is out. I just finally found where to plug in the 4wd buttons. I've got power to the red wire on the connector on the roof. No lights or anything else comes on when I turn on my lights or push the buttons. I'll admit, I'm a GM guy, but I got such a good deal on this rig I couldn't pass it up. This is going to be my fishing/hunting rig for hopefully a few years or longer. All help will be very much appreciated.

Invest in a manual transfer case and manual hubs.

Sounds like of it you have the Eddie Bauer edition.

None really for that electronic system. What you need and is probably missing is the electronic control module. It will have about 14 wires going into it and they go everywhere including the clutch switch and NSS.
FWIW: The most common failure in the 4x4 system is the shift motor on the transfer case, It is not known for being reliable ... Next to that the auto hubs. Which is why your hunting rig should be switched to the manual system, plus that would clean up the wiring mess.
how hard would it be to do the swap? does the floor have a plate I can take out for the shifter? or am I going to have to use my hvac skills and cut tin? would it be a bolt in swap? no other mods? I just got the thing running, drove it around the block and such. not bad for a $75 ride, but I need to keep it on the cheap.. really cheap to keep my wife happy.
I don't recall if they have a removable plate for the shifter, but you'd want to get a manual case and shifter from the junkyard - I don't recall if you can remove the electric shift motor and install just the manual shifter and parts. It may take some floorboard cutting - but other than that, it's pretty much a bolt-in swap, from what I understand. Sounds like you scored good, considering. If all the brake parts are still good and in working order and it runs fairly decently, $75 is a darn good steal of a deal, shouldn't require a whole lot of investment other than routine or corrective maintenance....
I had to change the lock cylinder because they didn't have keys anymore, and then the fuel pump in the tank. Whatever he had in that tank ate away the rubber hose from the pump to the hard line. It was like tar.
While I was under it doing the fuel pump I looked at the rear brake backing plates and noticed the pin heads looked pretty new. So I'm guessing it's got new rear brakes.
the auto x-fer case motor can be manually shifted, from under the truck!
You have to remove the motor first (it's a sealed area even w/o the motor attached...)
