My 95 Bronco has the push button 4wd, that unfortunately doesn't work. The button acts like its not even plugged in, no response when pushed. You don't hear/feel anything engage and no lights are displayed on the switch. I went to the junk yard and got a new(used) switch and it does the same thing.
After searching the forum I looked at the actuator board on the passengerside kick panel and when the white button is pressed the red led comes on and stays for probably around a minute then shuts off.
I don't know when the 4wd was last used, but I do know that it has a new transfer case in it. From the looks of it the old motor was used on the new case.
The most common fault in this situation is the shift motor. The red LED on the shift module indicates that the module is indeed getting the trigger from the button. However, the shift motor is obviously not responding. This usually occurs when the shift motor doesn't fully engage in a gear or the motor itself has failed.
Had the same problem with my '99 Super D. Put a test meter on the connector to the actuator motor and sure enough it was getting voltage. Slapped on a wrecking yard actuator ($45) and BINGO back in the saddle.
