I bought a 1989 Ford F250, the transmission (E40D) is going out rapidly. I found a salvage yard that says they have a good one but it does not have OD? Will this one work as a replacment?? Also, is there another Transmission that might be able to change out from the E40D with out modifications. My truck is 4x2 with a 460 eng. hope someone can help????
he is right if it doesn't have overdrive it not an E4OD. Great trans it was basically a C6 with over drive if all the updates are done with a good shift kit it Ben nothing but good for me. and i think others that have done the same will tell you the same. your engine computer works with the trans and your Eng will function but possibly in limp mode/ fail safe you will get bad gas milage poor performance etc. their is a range module that goes on the gear selector input shaft also you might fabricate something to work on the other trans. I forget the name ford calls it but it tells the computer the trucks in drive 2ND gear reverse etc. and has reverse lights in it as well. if you bought a mass air conversion kit you run a computer that would be in a manual mustang you can run whatever trans you'd like. but if you go back to the E4OD later You will have to run a stand alone trans computer like I'm ruining. its much easier to stay with your trans. I converted mine to mass air and a stand alone for performance reasons but that's a lot of work and I'm not sure that's what your after. good luck!

These guys are right. If it does not have overdrive it is a C6. It would bolt right up if it is from another 460 engine and it does not require a computer, however I would think you would need a different driveshaft and possibly crossmember and you would get less miles per gallon.
You might be better looking for another E4OD with torque converter or get yours rebuilt.
If you do get another trans make sure it is from a 460 engine.
What is actually wrong with your own one?
Well to try to explain, when you get to about 20-25 mph it starts feeling like it is in neutral. if i shift from 1st to 2nd then to "D" it does ok until i start slowing down. AAMOC did a free inspection on it and said that it nneds rebuilt. They said that it would cost 2000.00, they did not want me to even take it from there. Unfortunatly i don't have that kind of money to put into it at the time. And i am definatly no mech. any advice???
Any time you take something to AAMCO it is always going to need a rebuild, no matter what. Thats why the initial inspection is free. You need someone that knows what they are doing as far as trouble shooting it. High miles a rebuild may be in order but, you can do better price wise than aamco.
I have some advice. Don't ever go to AMMCO.
Look for a small local tranny shop that has been in business for many years. I bet if you ask around, you will find one. Many problems with the e4od are not transmission problems, but are caused by bad sensors, corroded connections, or a bad MLPswitch.
This tranny depends entirely on the electrical signals it recieves, and the age of these trucks together with the less than perfect electrical system can cause a whole lot of problems. I would be reluctant to swap trannys even if it was almost free, until I had spent a bunch of time looking into the sensors and wiring feeding the tranny.
A couple of years ago, a local shop quoted me $12-$1500 for a rebuild. I found the only problem was a sticking slip joint in the driveshaft.
