turn signals stopped working

I have a strange problem on my 2000 Excursion (2WD, V10). The turn signals stopped working.

If I turn the hazards on, that works fine, the dash lights flash and all corners flash.

If I turn on the turn signals, I get nothing, no clicking, no lights, etc.

I did replace the turn signal flasher relay and now it clicks, but I still don't have turn signals. (no lights on dash or outside).

Any ideas?

I've checked fuses 20 and 22 under the hood and they are fine.

Thanks,

John S.

I think it's the turn signal switch. You might try pressing the brake while the turn signals are going, and looking at the rear lights. With the turn signals flashing, one of the bulbs should still flash. IF no flash, then I'd believe the switch isn't running the flasher.

I'm a dummy... I replaced the rear A/C relay, not the flasher relay.

So here are the real symptoms... When I turn on the 4-way flashers/hazards. They work properly, the relay clicks, etc...

When I turn on the turn signal lever, either direction, I get nothing. My first thought is to replace the flasher. But, where the heck is it? I assumed it would be near the hazard relay, but its not. (and let me tell you, that is a joy to get to, my arm is probably going to take 2 weeks to heal).

Do the hazards and the turn signals use the same flasher? Is so, then it must be the switch (big fun, I'm sure), if they are not the same, where is the turn signal flasher?

Thanks,

John S.

I had a similar problem like this a year or so ago - not sure where the thread is. Seems there is a wire in the column that is "too short," from what I was told via this forum. See if you have this problem at all steering wheel heights. Some wire in there, can't remember which, had been pulled or "stretched" loose...

I found another symptom...

When the brake lights are on, whichever side has the turn signal on, doesn't illuminate.

It is not to difficult to get at the turn signal switch. I had a problem with my left signal not working. Everything else was fine. Took the column apart and found the main connector had come loose from the TS switch. Hooked it back up and secured it with wire ties and it has been fine for 8 months now.

The wires in the column are all too short.....

I noticed something strange today... I tilted the wheel all the way up and go the turn signals to work, but after lowering it and raising it up again, they didn't work...

Oh well, time to take the column apart.

I bet ya it is the TS plug, which is right on top of the column. That is exactly how mine would act.

Yep - that's what mine was. Thankfully this forum helped me figure that out prior to letting a dealer charge me a bunch. The short wires had pulled loose enough that if the wheel wasn't in the right spot contact wasn't made.

I literally joined this site to thank you!

I had been trying to figure out what on earth was causing my turn signals and emergency flashers to act out all day, after changing out my shift tube bushings. I knew it had to be something I had messed with, but I couldn’t place “What.” Well, I was just about done for the night, when I decided to do -one more search-, and boy am I glad I did, because I stumbled upon y’all’s thread here. I went out and adjusted the steering column “Up,” and sure enough, the little bugger started blinking again. Took it apart, and wouldn’t you know, the plug right on top of the multi-function switch was just barely “loose.” Pushed it back in, and voila! Perfecto!

I can’t thank y’all enough. I literally made this profile on here just to thank you. Much appreciated, folks!!

Edit: Sorry to resurrect an extremely old thread… 😬

Here just to say thank you to everyone for posting. I have the same issue and will be taking the column apart later today.
