So...I installed my gauges, got the tranny whammy'd, INSTALLED THE DP YESTERDAY!!!! Too bad the weather isn't conducive to really driving this thing.
I officially have the bug!
Now, aside from the compressor surge issues to work on, and the remaining list of to-do's that won't ever be complete, I was told I have placed my EGT probe in the wrong place. I clamped it in about 4" down from the turbo on the downpipe. I understand there can be quite a discrepency between pre-turbo and post-turbo temps, and there may be a little lag in temperature gauge response on the downpipe. My question is whether or not it's actually necessary to move the probe. If I allow for the fact that the gauge is reading post-turbo, and there may be a little lag in readings, is it really necessary? And with that, I've heard that sustained temps in the 1400-1500 degree range WILL be detrimental, if I watch for greater than 1000 degrees, and back off if I get close, will I be safe enough? I'm certainly not drag racing or anything. I'm towing about 10k in the 5th wheel and just want to be able to pull the hills without impeding traffic or turning on the 4-ways.
I appreciate the thoughts and input...this site is the best!
needs to be before the turbo..most put in the driver side up pipe..i put mine right in the driver side manifold..congrats on the new toys..PMS..AINT IT GREAT..
I second what Ron said. It need to be Pre Turbo as close to the engine as possible. Drivers side exhaust manifold just as it stars to bend. 7/16 drill and 1/4 pipe tap. its easy to get to and the most accurate. By the way I'm just down the road from you today, in Colo Springs. Nice weather Huh? Barney
So, I could simply move it to the up-pipe, between the manifold and the turbo and clamp it in?
And PMS? P? Modification Syndrome? Sorry...I'm used to the F.A.A.T. List...the FEMA Abbreviations and Acronyms Text, and other glossary-type publications!

It's really puttin' the damper on my testing of the new DP, and getting the 5th wheel ready for our vacation coming up on the 14th. All in due time I guess!

sorry again lol left ya a good link in the other thread to help you out..(fixed it in red above in your quote)
you can hold 1250 max you can go above but only in short burst like doing drag runs..if you put it in the manifold..start with a sharp small bit and work your way up..I magnetized my drill bits before I used them to hold most of the shavings..when i was done drilling i stuck the small bit up in to catch what the last bit didnt get...
Keep it under 1100 and you'll be fine. short burst over that are alright but not recommended. Remember higher RPM= more exhaust flow=lower EGT. glad you're moving the probe. you're 7.3 will thank you. Barney
Mike, like the others have said, put the probe before the turbo. Either the manifold or up-pipe is perfectly fine. But definately get it out of the downpipe, it's not doing any good there.
If you ever need any help, I'm only about 15 minutes away from you. Heck, if you want the probe in the manifold, I have the tap for it.
Thanks, Curtis...I've actually kinda been waiting for you to post here. I've read many of your most recent replies to other threads and am very impressed with your knowledge. And the fact that you're just down the road, certainly helps!
I actually work right over by the Harbor Freight in Littleton, so I just bought the right pipe tap. I'm hoping to get this changed before our trip to Phoenix, but this weather has really put a damper on my Pre-Vacation-Honey-Do-List, so the 5W isn't even ready yet.
Is the up-pipe thick enough to take a tap? or do I need the weld-in fitting? And if I go to the manifold, is there a particular place that's better? or one to stay away from?
Someday, I'll learn all the fine details of this engine!
