Possible high pressure oil problem.

Yesterday my truck dies right after startup. It would not start. I had it towed to a local shop and the tech there hooked up his scanner and found nothing wrong. No codes, etc...

All he noticed was there was no ICP when he would try to crank it up. He tried cranking till the batteries ran down. He then stuck the charge ron them and cranked some more. The ICP came up and the truck fired up.

It ran rought for a little bit then smoothed out. He then did a injector test, etc... All in all he said everything appeared to be normal. He just couldn't figure out what happened to it.

The truck had only been shut off for about 5 hours when this happened. I had been driving on the interstate for about 3 hours, shut it off for about 5, then this problem occured.

He said I may have a HPOP going bad, or possibly some leaky injector o-rings, or maybe the oil pump is going bad.

Anybody got any ideas? The oil is 2,000 mile old Rotella 5w40 synthetic. Oil level is fine too. I'm stumped here. It fired right up this Am after sitting for about 9 hours....

Any ideas?

Next time it happens check the oil level in the HPOP reservoir. It sounds like the reservoir drained down. Adding a little oil to the reservoir would have allowed it to start up sooner.

It could be an injector o-ring issue, and IPR issue, or just some fluke thing that happened.

IPR is the injection pressure regulator that controls how much high pressure oil is sent from the HPOP to the injector oil rails. ICP is the injection control pressure sensor that reads what this oil pressure is.

I would probably find another tech if it were me. I don't think he did you any favors.

If it were me, I would be checking ICP sensor to see if it went bad. It reads the oil rail pressure and sends that information back to the PCM (computer) and adjusts the IPR accordingly.

Next time this happens, try unplugging the ICP sensor which is located on the front of the drivers side head behind the alternator. If its unplugged, it should default to a value of around 700 psi and your truck needs 500-ish psi to fire. Also just FYI, when you unplug the ICP sensor, you will get a check engine light, but don't worry it will reset when the key is cycled.

I was out of town and this guy got me out of a huge jam, so he did me a huge favor. I believe the ICP is reading fine. He told me it showed no pressure, but as he cranked on it some more it started to come up.

How hard is it to check that valve in the HPOP?

That is the IPR. They can be removed and cleaned.. If you'd like, I can email you a .pdf file the explains it in detail.

I've already changed that a few months ago. I mean the valve in the HPOP reservoir. Isn't there some sort of anti-drain back valve in there?
