alternator regulator

Im working on a 65 F-100 an it does not seem to charge the battery so i un pluged it where it goes into the regulator with a piece of wire i was able to jump the terminals on the plug and i could hear it bog the motor down a bit that made me think it was the regulator so i replaced it still nothing. Any info would be great.

why don't you take the alternator in to your local autozone and have them test it for you? That's where I would start.

Is the charge light bulb blown out? On the early GM Alternators the ignition switch was wired to go through the Charge light bulb then to the regulator. If the bulb burned out it would not close the contacts in the regulator and not charge, just a thought, maybe Ford is wired differently.

Ever see a dented voltage regulator cover and wonder why it was dented?

The dent's there, because people bang on the cover, because the regulators points have a nasty habit of sticking closed.

Give it a whack...it's worth a try...and it won't cost you anything.

Defective Regulator

I just went through this problem. I wasn't getting the 14 volts at the battery while idling with a NEW Motorcraft solid state regulator. Bought 2 more at Napa, one mechanical and one solid state. The solid state was junk also, the Napa mechanical works perfectly.
Two defective regulators from two different suppliers. Always buy 2 to try out.

kjvforme is right... check the 'charge' bulb. If that's ok, take the alternator and have it checked. While you're there, pick up a new regulator.. they're cheap. That should take care of it as long as you don't have a wiring/connector issue somewhere.

If the regulator points are sticking "TMK" that will drain the battery when shut down. I could be confused but don't think so. A local station/garage should be able to test your system and let you know for not to many Washington's.
