Transmission problems

I have encountered a major transmission problem. I was on my way home from the gym last night and in town i noticed that my tranny was shifting at some unusual times well the closer i got to home the worse it got. I checked the fluid when i got home and couldn't tell for sure if there was any in it so i added some ATF. I backed out of the driveway and went up the road, it felt like the transmission was holding back and shifted into 2nd i had to slow down for a stop sign and when i got on it to go on up the road the motor reved to about 2700 RPMs i let off and it shifted finally. So i turned around and went back to the house and parked it. It seemed like the further i went the less it wanted to shift. Also when i pulled the dipstick out to check the fluid it kinda had a scorched smell to it.

You are describing the pump going out, and like you said, you now have a smell, that is from not having enough pressure on the clutchs for them to completely engage..Sorry man.. Wish I had something better for you.

As far as a rebuild or remanufacture, look around. BTS is what most would suggest, including myself, but I didnt have $4500.00. I used a friend of mine's recomendation with who to go to, I had mine done for 1900.00, I have the 3 disk Torque Convertor, I have kevlar clutch packs, I have the transgo shift kit, and ect. So search around.

Google Swamps Diesel. They are in Nashville. But I can't remember if they do transmissions or not. At any rate, talk to them and see what they can do, or if they have a local shop they can recommend. That's probably the closest shop to you that I can find. Some folks here run Swamps injectors/tuning/etc.

If they don't do tranmissions and can't recommend a good local shop, BTS is in Arkansas. At least with BTS you won't have to worry about the trans anymore. Some local shops are hit and miss.... with many being a miss.

I talked to a buddy of mine who works on them for a living, and he suggested a couple of things to check:
1. Pump failure (possible but not likely)
2. Filter stopped up (financially i sure hope so!!!!)
3. Torque Converter failure (don't know for sure)

Thanks Pocket I would love to go ahead and go with BTS but i don't know how long the company i work for is going to be open. The Agriculuture implement industry is down drastically.
That plus poor management is leading to our demise (One of the largest implement Companies in the Country)

I have been blessed to maintain 40 hours but the truck is where i was making a lil extra cash. Which brings me back to the current problem. It may be time to offload a few toys!

Update!!! I pulled the Transmission pan last night to check the filter. I took a sample of the ATF to check for flakes. The fluid looked really nasty and when i pulled the filter it was had gunk built up on the media and the casing on the filter was black. I don't know if this will remedy the problem but it figured it was worth a shot. More updates this evening when i get home.

Thank you I appreciate it. How often should the transmission filter and fluid be changed i have heard between 30,000 and 75,000. I know that i havent changed either in the year i have owned the truck. But i dont think it has ever been changed judging by the Ford P/N #

It should be changed at 30,000 miles.

The housing on the filter is black plastic. If there is enough junk in the filter that it needs to be replaced then the trans is junk and needs to be replaced.

I'm with Mark on this one. The damage has been done. You're not going to be limping this trans around for very long.

The housing on the filter is metal with a "glaze" of what looks similar to motor oil on the outside of it. i wiped it off on one side and could tell it was metal.. I am looking into having it rebuilt anyway but i don't want to unless it is needed. Are there any suggested upgrades that i should have done while it is out. Keeping it within a decent budget.
Thanx
