2nd time I've ever heard that. Come to think of it the 1st time came from the same source

What did you add to the thread that helped out the original poster???

I gaurantee I am not the only one lost by your string post. I may just be the only one with juevos big enough to point out the pointlessness of it though

If I put a normal house hold plug onto the welder and ran it off a normal plug it will trip the breaker. What if I put a bigger breaker in like a 50amp?
Will it still trip?
Any ideas would be great...

If he has an electric it is probably 220v and I would be wired with 12 ga solid (not strand) wire - depending on the age of the house.

I would do a little investigating to see what it is (shut off breaker and pull socket out of wall - look at wire type/gauge) and then make the cecision from there...
Just for enlightenment, a 12 ga wire is good for 20 amps. Dryer is usually a 30 amp outlet and a lot of guys run their 50 amp welders on them. If you aren't running a heavy rod and high amps it works fine. Best bet is a new outlet. If the panel is in the garage and there is space for the breaker it won't take long.

If he answers that one and a few more questions, he'll be taken care of.

So, what's it going to cost me to tow my neighbor's old Dodge 4wd from
his mom's house to here? How long will it take?
LOL :)

I run my 220 Welder from the dryer outlet in my house....I just built a heavy duty extension cord with the dryer plug on the house end and the welder outlet on the other....Doesn't get hot, Doesn't trip the breaker or anything. Works great and it only cost me about 60 bucks to make the cord!!! I just unplug my extension and plug the dryer back in when I am done.

Right now I've got 2 lines run of 220v single phase. 1st is 10ga braided strand wire, 2nd is 12 ga solid core. 10ga braided I have run for years (60 amp breaker) and have had zero issues.
12ga run is newish. It was an existing 220v line that had a 30 amp breaker on it (also has a 60 amp now) and was running a large industrial fan for a spray booth. I have yet to run the welder on it, as I JUST changed the plug/socket style and breaker.

I will run my 220v plasma cutter or Miller 385 TIG on either and don't expect any problems. I don't weld anything big (3/16" is usually the biggest), so my power on the welder is usually low.
