Electrical ?

Getting ready to hook up an older Lincoln stick welder. The run from the breaker box to the outlet will be around 50 ft. The plug on the welder is 30 amp. 220volt. What size wire do I need to run? Will 10 gauge work or should it be 8? I'm assuming 10 will work but want to be sure. Also what size breaker? 30 amp. to match the plug or bigger? I bought the welder used and did not see what they were using. Thanks.

If you use 30 amp wire (10) don't go higher than a 30 A breaker. 8 would be better.

10 Gauge is what you should use for a 30 amp rated load. If it was over 100 ft. run, then 8 would be better. 30 amp breaker should be used also. Breakers are only capable of 80% of their rated load. So, it is very unlikely that your welder will draw 30 amps. If it does, the breaker will trip, doing it's job. GLR is right, with 10 gauge wire, don't use anything higher than a 30 amp breaker. If you decide you want to run a 40 amp circuit to the welder, use 8 gauge wire.

Thatnks for the answers. Now another question. Is 30 amp. going to be big enough for the welder or do I need a 40? It has a 30 amp. plug but that may have been all they had when the put it on the welder. It is not the factory plug.

What's the output on the welder. Is it a AC/DC. Better yet, what's the model number. Most of the larger "cracker box" type welders require 50 amps.

there should be a electrical name plate on the welder stating operating voltage and current.

The size of the AC wire you place should be based on the size of the fuse/breaker that feeds that circuit. First determine how much current the welder is rated for. After you know the current draw, chose the appropriate fuse/breaker size. After you know the size of the fuse/breaker, select the wire gauge that is appropriate for that fuse/breaker. The last thing you should select is the plug and receptacle which should be based on the size of the fuse/breaker, not the current draw of the welder.

I finally remembered to look at the welder. It needs a 50 amp. circuit. What size wire do I need for a 50 amp. circuit? Thanks

6 guage wire. You also need to change the plug on the welder. You can get the 220v 50amp plug and receptacles at Lowes or Home Depot.

Well I have never wired up a welder before so bear with me. I'm almost positive you will need 4 conductors (3 conductors and a ground). Well if thats the case when you go to Home Depot or Lowes tell them you need "X" ft. of #6 SER. If you only need two conductors and a ground tell them you need "X" ft. or #6 SE. This is just to make your life easier if you get someone that doesn't know anything about electrical.

Wire

Just go to local supply house or home depot, etc and bring your 50 plug from welder and match it up to a recp. For the wiring u can use NM6/3 w/ground wich is a 1black wire-1white wire-1red wire-and 1bare ground that is for a 4wire plug or if it is 3wire plug ask for NM6/2 w/ground which is 1black wire-1white and 1bare ground.

NM = romex wire when you ask the for always ask for with ground
